I have a Sidekick slide whose battery is shot, I'm surprised the phone even turns on. Anyway my sister has a blackberry that she's willing to lend me but do I NEED to have the Blackberry data plan to have it functioning for Calls and Texts?

Nope. They function just fine as a "normal phone" without the data plan...

Yeah, the only thing you need a data plan for is picture messaging or mobile web browsing. You won't need it for voice calls and SMS.
