To ship or to travel, that is the question...

So, I very urgently have to move from Portland, OR to Temecula, CA, which is just a bit north of San Diego. As many of you know I've been complaining about not having any more eggs, but I guess that was lucky! Any way, I will be driving down, it's about a 16 hour drive. I was hoping to get some opinions on how to move my geckos. I could either take them in the car with me, or ship them ahead of time.

If I take them in the car I will be putting each gecko in it's own deli cup, and securing similar to a shipping set up. This will save me a lot of money, and I also feel there is less risk.

On the other hand, my father will be driving with me, and I know he's not really a "road trip" type of guy. He'll probably want to stop at a hotel/motel and make it a two day trip. So the geckos will be cramped up in the deli cups for possibly two days.

Any advice?

Ok before I answer just know I am new at being a gecko mama. I would suggest those small aquarium things at the pet store and heat packs. I would not suggest shipping because it can go so very wrong. My poor little turtle was handled very poorly. The delivery man handed me the box upside down. This is from a newby I am sure someone with more experience will come along very soon.

I would say take them with you. Even if you stop for the night you can check on them, and give them water. Maybe even take them out for a bit at the motel. Assuming your staying at one and depending on how many geckos you have. I say save your money. Also I'm not sure but I think the people that do reptile shows keep them im deli cups the whole weekend. Hope this helps:)

very sorry to hear that you have to move out of the area. Fortunately we just moved our entire collection in a similar trip. I would have to say that shipping for us was out of the question. transporting them with you in the car in a similar fashion as you would to ship is the way to go. our 12 our trip. i got a big rubber-made container put all our herps in individual appropriately sized deli cups. Put them in the container and stuffed that with shredded paper. put them in the back of the rent-a-van and they were good to go.

I'd say they were in there for 48 hours max packed them up Thursday night then packed up all the herp supplies cages racks and our stuff all day Friday took off early Saturday morning and they were out of there cups at around 10 or 11 that night. not a single lose of anything in our collection, barely even could tell they had been stressed.

Would not trust the shippers with more then 3 or 4 geckos, they can barely get that right some times. jmo

I would take them with you. They are better off with you than with UPS/fed-ex. That way you can check up on them. Also with shipping you would have to worry about them getting there safe and all those other stresses involved. You will also save money :D
