HELP!! Toes/foot fall off?

I just lost a my 3 1/2 yr old gecko 2 weeks ago due to complications (infection) following a procedure to fix a semial fluid blockage, according to the vet. Today I got a 4 yr old leopard gecko from some ppl. I noticed right away he had old shed build up around one foot. It was constricting the entire foot and all the toes were swollen. When I got him home I soaked the foot in warm water and was able to gently pull off the old shed. There is "raw" looking tissue about 1/2 way around the area. The toes are of course, still swollen and don't seem to be moving. There is no black looking tissue. I put some neosporin on the area. My question is, does it sound like he will lose the foot? Or is possible that the blood flow being restored will heal it completely? I would guess it has was 5-6 sheds that was built up there. I'm somewhat hopeful since there's no black tissue. Also, does it sound like I should take him to the vet? I'm not sure what more could be done. Any ideas? Thanks!

Well I think there is still hope since the foot and toes are not necrotic (black). As for swelling it could be a good sign since swelling is caused by a build up of fluid in the tissue...atleast the tissues have fluid to nourish them. I wouldn't give up just keep the area very clean to prevent infection and hopefully it will be fine. Good luck. :)

Agreed. Keep him on clean paper towel and Neosprin on the foot. Hopefully, it wil heal. Great job! (Just watch for signs of infection, and then a vet trip would be in order).

Thanks for the responses. It looks about the same today. I poured a little peroxide on it, and will add more Neosporin once it dries. I appreciate the great advice!

I would avoid the peroxide, per the advice from my vet to never use peroxide on these guys. I can actually inhibit the ability of the tissue to heal.

I have been having toe/foot issues due to a bad shed (and the proceeding chewing of her own foot :main_rolleyes: ), which actually did become infected. We were actually worried that we might have to amputate her toes and/or a portion of her foot.

Aside from the antibiotics, the vet has suggested soaks in sterile saline solution 2xs daily and a sterile environment, like Marcia said. I just keep her on paper towels and it seems to work very well. Fortuantely, all of the necrotic tissue is now gone and we're just waiting for it to finish healing. :D

This guy is lucky to have found a good new home!
