Hi Everyone, I've got a tokay gecko with an odd ailment. His name is Gene.
He's usually white and red, but this is the only pic I have on this PC and he's trying to camouflage
I've had him for about 8 or 9 years.
About 5 months ago, he started losing weight. Not terribly so, but he was not as plump as he used to be and seemed to be losing appetite. I took him to the vet around that time, suspecting parasites. We ended up doing the standard treatment followed by antibiotics. That seemed to help his appetite but he still hasn't recovered his weight totally.
He eats alright, but he's not as quick as he used to be. His sticky pads are also not working as well it seems, as I see his feet slipping a lot as he climbs. He's had sticky pad issues in the past due to stuck shedding but a trip to the vet solved that as well (I keep the tank moist but sometimes its difficult in the summer since its a 120 gallon).
Anyway his pads look good now, visually, but still have trouble sticking. I've spoken to several vets about him over his lifetime but none have had any concrete answer for what this might be.
From my experience with reptiles, the symptoms coincide with metabolic bone disease. However, I dust his crickets every day with Miner-All and keep a 5.0UVB light on his tank (under which he likes to bask a few days a week).
He lives with one female, Dasha, and she has none of these issues. I got her about 2 years ago after a mysterious death of the previous one, Lisa. She too had none of these issues and lived with him for about 5 years (I'm not sure how old she was).
Sorry for the rambling post, but I'm really quite stumped after all this time. Has anyone ever come across anything like this?
