I have a female who is ovulating, and a male who is showing A LOT of interest in breeding with her. My male is around a year old, I think my female is a bit older. Neither of them are full grown, although I doubt that they'll get any longer. My male is filling out right now, and my female is rapidly gaining weight and belly fat like nothing I've seen before, so I am considering breeding her for the first time this ovulation.
I am just a little concerned because of her size. She is fat as hell, but she is still a bit smaller than my older female. She is 8 inches long, but is still proportionately smaller in terms of body size. I don't have a scale to weigh them, but a estimate my smaller female is around 40g and my larger is 55g. My larger has been bred before, but the male I want to pair her with is too young still, so if I want babies this season it has to be my smaller blizzard female.
She looks ready to breed to me. I have seen females smaller than her lay, and the male isn't significantly bigger than her, and isn't too aggressive. She lost a bit of tail when she first started ovulating, but she fattened right back up when I started feeding her more often. I have no doubt that if she becomes gravid that she will be able to maintain the weight because she eats like a pig.
Are there many negative outcomes to breeding a female that small? I suppose the eggs could have an egg impaction, or she could be stubborn and refuse to lay them, but what else could happen? She is very healthy and hardy, and keeps practically begging me to put the male back into her tank. And he has been itching to get at her too, he even howls from across the room to her. Even though I have been hesitating because of her size, I almost want to pair them just to satisfy their desires xD
Should I let them breed? I mean, if she can ovulate, doesn't that mean she is capable? There is A LOT of pink in there, so I know if they mate there will be eggs. I have done my research, but if they copulate, I will be giving the eggs to my local reptile store/breeder since I am terrible with hatchlings and he has cared for my babies in the past with much success and I don't have an incubator ^^'
By the way, my female is a blazing blizzard and my male is a murphey's patternless. My female has gotten a lot bigger since this picture was taken, its been a month since I've had a camera. She has gotten fat!
