I have breeding mealies for a while, and I have been pretty successful so far.. But recently I have noticed some of my meal worms are going into the pupae stage a little early.. they are about the size of small meal worms. Is this due to lack of heating?

Korb,

I have a lot of colonies going. I have noticed if you keep them REALLY high (90-95) OR if they have unlimited carrots. For some reason these two things make them go into pupadation early. I keep my mealworm racks at 86 Breeding season I'll raise to 89.

Hope this helped,

Kaleb

This does help! the issue now is I live upstairs and during the day it gets REALLY hot! so I guess there really is nothing I can do?

Hi Corb,

If you have the hole upstairs, you could probaly put them in the closet/bath room with a UTH. I would use a small one and I'd say you'd be fine.

Kaleb.

No bathroom upstairs.. i have to go downstairs :(... As for closet it is a little weird as well since our closets dont have doors on them they are open to the room.. I think the issue was that I had too many carrots for them like you mentioned above.

Try giving them a carrot once every two days (the big carrots not the baby ones) If that doesn't work keep them in a DARK cool place with a uth.
