Trying to figure out my heating set up.

Hello, new to this forum.

I plan to have my leopard gecko on slate tiles that I picked up from Home Depot. I have an exo terra desert heat wave 8x8 under tank heater and I will need to supplement it with a low wattage ceramic heater possibly as my room is generally cool.

I will hydrofarm thermostat to control the temp of the heat mat but it is not enough to bring it up to the optimal temperatures.

I am thinking of using a ceramic heater plugged into a timer bar for the day and have the heat mat plugged into the hydrofarm thermostat so that it will turn it off when the temp gets too high on the ground of the tank and on when its too low. At night time I would imagine the thermostat keeping it on as the heat mat will not get hot enough. This means I can simulate a slight night time temperature drop.

In terms of temperature, my heat mat seems to get up to 31 degrees celsius on the slate tiles during the day (optimally I should have it around 32). I am concerned for the winter when it will definitely be colder. That would make the thermostat on my under tank heater pointless but I think it will be necessary for summer time when the temperatures get high(but again my room is the coldest in the house, which is nice in the summer). So this is where the ceramic heater will come in.

Will this work?

Thanks in advance.

Does the underside of your tile have ridges on it? If it does, this might be what's causing the tile not to heat up as well. You could try putting a thin layer of sand under the tile (where the leo can't get to it) or a layer of paper towels. This should help carry the heat from the mat to the entire tile, instead of just the small ridges that are actually touching the tank.

I keep my house very cool as well, and use tile and noticed this same problem. A thin layer of sand seems to have really helped, and my tank is currently reaching the right temperatures without the need for anything other than the heatmat and thermostat.

I'm go NA try power towels below the tile if it doesn't get. Writer I'm gonna use Sand to get rid of those air pockets.

Maybe reptile carpet would be best though.

Or get a bigger heat pad. My 18" x 18" x 12" Exo Terra tank has a 16-watt heat pad. I have thick ceremic tiles with no sand or paper. The temperature can get up to 105F on the tiles. I use a Hydrofarms Thermostat to keep it at 95F.
