1) Has anyone in the forums ever had a gecko drop its tail? i heard they do that but im not entirely sure if thats true. Ive hunted wild lizards and a tail came off but it was very skinny! their tails are so fat and it looks hard to drop lol

and 2) How can i tell my lizard is not dehydrated? i wanna make sure hes drinking a little bit !!

From what Ive seen around here its not too hard for them to drop their tails fat or not. And also I saw someone post that if you pinch the skin on their sides or belly and it remains pinched for 3 or so secondes, that yes your gecko is dehydrated.

We actually had a leo drop her tail twice. Her first shed after she came home was a hard one for her, and she lost it then. Once she had started getting it back, she moved into a tank with another girl. I guess the stress was too much for her, and she lost it again. She grew it back ok, and is doing well now. If you look at available leos on a breeder site, and it notes a "regenerated tail" that means the gecko has dropped it's tail and grown a new one back.

I'd agree with Misty about the pinch test for checking dehydration, but I think he's just drinking when you aren't looking. I've had my gecko about 8 months and just saw him drink two weeks ago. If you are really worried about his water intake just put a drop on the side of his mouth and let him lick it off.

I never see my geckos drink(although Loki does seem to enjoy sitting in the waterfall....) but from what Ive heard they obtain most of the hydration they need from their food and the humidity in the air so if your only worried cuz you dont see it drink, than you have nothing to worry about.

If you are still curious about tail loss, there is another thread on the forum you can search for that has a picture of a leo that has lost it's tail, and a picture of a regenerated tail. You might find it useful. I think the name of the leo is Jackson, so try that in the search box. Have you tried the drop of water on the head? If so, let us know if it worked. Good luck.

Found it for you:

http://www.geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=35134

Scroll way down for the picture of the regenerated tail, which is usually shorter and fatter.

I've yet to see either of my adults drink but I think its safe to say with the length of time I've had them that they do :main_yes:

Don't fret it, if there's clean water available and they are thirsty they will drink it, albeit in privacy for whatever reason.:main_rolleyes:
