Ugh, crickets.

:main_rolleyes:

I hate crickets. I hate the supplier I get crickets from. I work at a pet supply store and I get them dirt cheap, but the supplier is a load of crap. A lot of other people in my province rave about them but I can't stand them. Their customer service is horrdendous in my experience, especially over the phone and internet.. when I DID visit their storefront location, it was dirty.. and I was buying a hovabator.. the sales rep took me to the back of the store to show me how to set it up.. and there were dead rats lying on the table he was working on. Fine, sell dead rats, but seriously, it's gross to leave them sitting on the counter/desk like that. (This is out of public view, but ugh just gross.lol) I can't change my managers mind about ordering from them because the price is the lowest and they deliver for free. And for the amount of BS I go through, the price wins.. I can't afford to order privately and pay as much for delivery as I do for the crickets, which will still be double what I pay at work for them. (Yes. I've tried looking into it, haha. Maybe I'll look some more, though.)

I get 500 for $12 or 1000 for $25. The problem is.... is that half the time they send us TINY crickets (we always order 2/3)...boxes of 1000 instead of 500... or boxes of dead crickets.

Now my rant is actually about myself. I picked up a box of 1000 from the reptile show. I was HOPING someone else would be vending the little nasties, but no, my usual place, who runs the show, was the only person vending them. So I was stuck. And they were the same quality, inconsistent size and a few dead (not as many as sometimes.) But I killed a bunch myself. I keep the stupid things in a 20G tank lined with oatmeal and gutload. I left one of the egg carton packers face down by accident and suffocated at least 150 of them.

I'm strongly, STRONGLY considering just getting into breeding these things myself. I have ten geckos and 4 turtles who eat the occasionally hopper.. so why not. I'll sell extras to the store I work at and my cricket customers that I get at work.

Sure..... worms would be easier, but my geckos don't favour them (I do give them variety once or twice a month but I practically have to force feed a couple of them to make them try them) and honestly..worms creep me the heck out. They're just..gross. Crickets don't really bother me aside from the smell.

So theres a cricket rant.

You may want to consider starting a colony of dubia roaches. They are not as creepy as they sound, have no smell, no sound. And are by far the most nutritious feeder currently in Herpetoculture. And did I mention they are easy as pie to breed!

Yeah.. I know, they sound really good.... but I'm not sure it's legal in Canada to keep them? I thought I read that somewhere. Plus my parents were pretty grossed at the idea.. if they got loose.. oh god the woodwork.. It would be different if I lived on my own..of course..then I'd have so many more geckos and consider feeding options differently.

They are strictly terrestrial, and have 0% pest Potential. Especially in the Great White North

Oh, really? I didn't know that.. interesting. They were selling..roach.. set things at the show last weekend. Maybe I'll consider it. They're a bit ugly..but not raelly much worse than crickets. I'm sure my geckos would take to them.

Im strongly thinking about getting into dubia roaches... Everytime I hear the crickets chirp, it drives me deeper and deeper into the depths of insanity...

Not sure where you’re from in Ontario, but I know here for sure it’s illegal to keep them but there still available from people in different cities just though you should know.
