I have gone through two UTH in the the last week. The first one shorted out within two days. The second one after four days it just gets warm. So I was wanting to know what kind of under tank heater you all use the brand name and size
Also I've had my two Leos for about six days now and I haven't seen them eat. I leave a bowl of meal worms for them and put about six crickets in their for them and they haven't eaten any thing. Are they still trying to adapt to the new place. Or should i be worried?

Well, with both of the UTH dying, and weird temps happening (not constant) I'm sure they are still trying to adapt.

Instead of purchasing an UTH from a pet store, I would try getting one from a good online supplier. Also, you need a temperature controller of some sort...a rheostat, thermostat, etc. That will regulate the temperature, and therefore prevent spikes and falls that could be leading to burn outs.

heat pads have coils in them that can break if you bend them. Don't know if this is the case but I thought I'd try and help with some trouble shooting.

If it helps, I've been there. The first UTH I got was defective and quit working after a day, so far the second was working OK but still wasn't hot enough ( so now my AFT has it) and I got her a new one made for dessert temps. After than I have learned to keep a low watt heat bulb on hand in case I run into another issue. Its not belly heat but it will work for a few hours until the stores open. Always make sure you have a way of regulating the temps and a digital probe for correct readings, I've found them invaluable.

I have an exo-terra heat wave one (2 actually) made for the desert animals. dont kno the size but they are made for 10 gallons... I have no thermostat/ rheostat but may have to invest once the weather warms up here. my temps stay at about 88-92. I've never had a problem.

Wow, your lucky! I have never been able to do that.
I always need a thermostat or the UTH will go up to 110F!!

I've personally used Zoo Med's Repti Therm U.T.H for 10-20 and 30-40 gallon terrariums and Hagen Exo Terra Heatwave Desert Vivarium Heater - 10.5" x 11". They worked just fine and I was able to get the proper temps.

I know, i have been lucky... i just tiled the tanks tho and i was worried the tiles would hold too much heat and get to hot, but so far so good. Its freezing here right now though, so i'm thinking that once the summer comes i'm gonna have to figure something else out (we never turn the air on and the windows are always open)

Get a Ultrathrem UTH from Bean Farm and a decent thermostate :main_yes:

That's what I used for years too. So far every one of those Ultratherm heat mat still works fine.

grimm, if your UTH is not heating up the enclosure floor, you can try putting some insulating material beneath the UTH, that'll force all the heat to go up instead of distributing to other areas.

Yes, that does truly work. When my cheapy UTH wouldn't act right, I would put a folded dry face towel between the UTH and the shelf that the tank was on. It made a considerable difference.
