Underbelly vs Backheat ???

Hey gals and guys,

Can anyone tell me whats the difference if you use underbelly heat or backheat? If the back third of the enclosure is maintained between 88-90 degrees whats the difference? I understand that the heat is directly beneath the gecko, but if the back third of the tub is heated to an 89 degree temp the small footprint a leopard gecko makes on the surface of the tub is not going to allow the space under it to become less than 89 degrees correct?? thanks for any input I appreciate it Devin

If you set the back heat so it heats the bottom of the tub for a few inches in the back, then it's essentially the same as belly heat. I have found that belly heated racks are more energy efficient though. They seem to retain heat better, so the heat source doesn't need to run as hot.

There was a thread on this earlier. It seemed from that thread that belly heat was better. I will try and find that thread for you, and then post it. Some people say that leos, have to have belly heat to properly digest food, however I have a pet leopard geckos, with bulbs on her for heat, and she has been fine 2 years. However in my breeder racks, I use belly heat that is supplied by heat cable.
