I purchased a zoo-med undertank heater yesterday, and i'm aware that it should take atleast six hours to get to maximum heat.. well i had it on all night and i woke up this morning and the thermometer in my terrarium still only said 70 which was about the temperature of my house. the thermometer is up on the wall of the terrarium so i figured this is probably why, but to make sure, i stuck my hand inside and could just barely feel any heat through the reptile carpet.. it was just a little warm if anything at all and it felt relatively warm when i felt the outside of it but nothing special...kindof lame. so i don't know about this UTH, i've heard it can actually work really well but not for me i guess. Also, I have read many other posts online and such regarding this but i have not really gotten a straight answer as to my geckos teeth.. He is a juvenile, about 1-2 months i've been told but this is only an estimate, and everytime he misses a cricket he bites the reptile carpet and yesterday i watched him struggle for about five seconds before getting free. I felt really bad.. can this cause any serious harm to him? i've heard of leo's losing toes and such from this but mine doesn't seem to have any problems with that, just his mouth. He doesn't do this all that often and when he does it's usually a really quick thing, he gets free in a couple seconds but yesterday i saw it and felt awful. so, if anyone knows if any real damage is being caused when this happens please let me know. i was under the impression by many people that this carpet was perfect for my gecko but now i'm seeing the other side of things. is it really urgent that i find a new substrate right away? I can't use paper towels because of the UTH if i decide to still use it and i don't exactly have a lot of money right now to purchase a different substrate. Thank you
