UTH and Slate question.

After extensively searching the web for a couple hours Ive come short of answers >_<..

I have been working on a new home for my four leos and this time around Id like to use slate as my substrate for easy wipe down cleaning and to serve as decorative eye candy.

Its a big home about 60x18x18.

My concern is, will two heat lamps both 75 watt be able to heat the slate enough to the point where I dont need a UTH?

I have two UTH's that I can reuse but can that go directly under the slate?

yes the UTH can go under the slate. the UTH do not get that hot, mine can only get to about 100 degrees. just give the slate sometime to heat up first and you should have no problems.

hmmm my main question really, is .. Can I properly heat slate or ceramic tile by having ONLY heat lamps?

Depends on how close the lights get.
Put the lights on, and after a few hours, touch the tile underneath it and see if it is warm.

Yes, you can heat the tiles up with heat lamps only. They absorb heat pretty well. I had my set up like that for a while. The UTH's are just cheaper and more efficient IMO though and thats why i went with one on my big tank.

and if you have UTH's to reuse, I would. as long as the slate tiles arent like an 3/4 inch thick or thicker they will penetrate the tile.

Okay thanks! Ill post pics of my little project soon. Only problemo about the UTH's is that I didnt think ahead and so theres like no room between the wood and the slate :( unless I use a saw to cut what wood is underneath and place the UTH under it.
