Just wondering if anyone has cracked/shattered/blownout the glass bottom for their aquarium with a uth?

The question is along the lines of if a water dish gets spilled is it all over?

If you have the UTH on a dimmer there is a 100 kajillionbillion to 1 chance of that happening.

If not then the odds are slightly less like a million to one.

I'm sure anything is possible, but the packing on UTHs says that the UTH must be kept dry. So long as the UTH isn't getting wet, I think you'll be safe.

Are you concerned about a leaking seal? Or maybe you have the UTH inside the tank under tiles?

I suppose if the glass was hot and cool or cold water was spilled directly on the glass it could crack.

Using 12x12 slate tiles at each end with a 2 6x6 tiles filling the gap between (20g long). I was gonna put a couple extra paper towels under the 6x6's to absorb some water but wasn't sure how much of an issue it was.

I have the uth on a thermostat so I'm guessing when its on and it would get to at least 100 degrees before turning off. Water is on the far end but I've been known to be clumsy once or twice :D

I'm much more used to heating water in aquariums then avoiding it :p

The only time I cracked one was when they were too close to our house electric baseboard heater. :main_angry: And it cracked pretty bad but not all the way through. :( I don't think you have anything to worry about if its done correctly.:) Good Luck< Deb

To date, I've only had a ceramic heat emitter get hot enough to make glass crack/break. I don't think heat tape or the like will get hot enough to cause this, even when not connected to any type of temp control.
