UTH with Plastic

Hi guys!

I posted this in the housing section but no one responded.

So here it goes :

I'm addicted and I want to get more Leo's! (I currently have one Gecko in a 10 gallon with an UTH . I don't have enough room for more tanks and want something that will conserve space)

I have a plastic set of drawers you can buy at Target or Walmart. It is the one with wheels and has three drawers. (Pic below)

If I use an UTH on the bottom of one of the drawers will it cause a fire? If so what should I use? Could I put the UTH on the back of one of the drawers or is Belly Heat needed?

Thanks!

It looks similar to this :

the uth should be on the bottom for belly heat with the leos. As long as the temperature of the uth stays under control it should be fine I'd think. Best tool to get is an infrared temp gun to measure floor temps accurately. Most people on here use a similar set ups with plastic tubs as houses with heat tape under them to provide heat from underneath

I personally would not use that sort of thing for housing Leos. I have heard too many horror stories of people losing their beloved pet because those things are not secure.

What do you mean by losing?
As in them escaping?

Do you know what kind of heat tape they use?

I would attach it to a thermostat if you think that is a good idea.

I'm pretty sure Russ S was implying that the geckos can escape from the drawer system.

The main company that produces the heat tape the majority of people use is called Flexwatt. There is another company I think called Calorique but it's the same stuff essentially. You can also use heat cable you can buy from a pet store which can be more convenient is some set ups. Comes down to personal preference I think. A thermostat is definitely a good idea to control heat tape. Heat tape will overheat, melt and cause fires if not managed by some device.
