Very sick gecko :(

So I got 2 Leo's from the petstore about a week ago. One is completely fine but the other has had the shakes since I got him so I gave them pure calcium and always dust with calcium and vitamin D (though I haven't gotten them to eat much. They tend to bite the cricket then spit it out). Tonight I found him upside down in the water dish. He is still alive, but just barely. He can barely move and his eyes aren't open. Is there ANYTHING I can do at this point? I feel like he had something from the store because my other Leo has been perking up lately and they are kept together in a ten gallon with dry Eco earth and I feed them individually in a big kritter keeper. They are both unsexed and about 3.5 inches. Don't know age. ~95 hot spot. Their hide is around 90 depending on what level they sit on.

Well he stopped breathing :(
I'd still like to hear what you think may have happened, especially if it's something I'm doing considering I have another gecko in there. It seems perfectly healthy though...

It is very hard to say what it may or may not have been. I recently saw a video of a gecko in the "hatchling section" (i think) of a gecko that would rarely/barely walk...it would just twitch its head&tail if "stimulated" (by a person or even just a cricket in the area). I think that gecko was assumed to have issues with it's nervous system.

If you fill out the questionaire at the top of the Health&Medications section (copy and paste it), it will provide very important details to us so we can try to evaluate possible causes.

Hopefully it was not a contagious issue. :(

I've never heard of or experienced a problem like what you describe, but I think it would be an excellent idea to disinfect the tank in case there was something viral/parasitic going on with the other lizard. I'd advise putting you gecko in a tupperware container and using a bleach solution to clean the tank and everything in it. Be sure to rinse thoroughly after disinfecting. Good luck!

I'm sorry that one of your geckos died. If you just purchased the geckos one week ago, I would say that one was probably on the way out before you even got it home. :( There's no way to tell what was wrong with him.

Shaking is usually a good sign of some sort of imbalance in the body, most likely either calcium or D3 (also a symptom of MBD). If he was getting too much D3 at the pet store, for example, this can impede calcium absorption and this means the muscles don't have the calcium they need to move properly (calcium isn't just important for bones, but for all nerve signals to muscles as well.) However, it could be the opposite problem, maybe he wasn't getting enough of any calcium and this was the cause of the imbalance. Without knowing how he was kept it's hard to say but if I had to put money down on any one cause I'd say it was some sort of nutritional imbalance.

sorry for your loss.
their are a few things that can cause these symptoms ie neurological problems and MBD. im not a vet buy my thoughts would be that it was most likely in the advanced stages of MBD in which case theres nothing you could have done.

have you contacted the store and complained?

Even if you were providing the absolute worst care possible (which I don't think you are!!) One week is usually not enough time to seriously harm a leo. My guess would be that you bought a very sick leo from the pet store to begin with. A picture of the leo you say is fine would help folks determine if it is okay. It should have a reasonably plump tail and be eating readily after a week in a new enclosure. I would not handle it at all while it settles into its new home, especially if it is very young and not eating well.

If you complete the following info and link us a picture we may be able to provide better advice! http://geckoforums.net/f130-health-medications/70912.htm
