Hey

I'm new to keeping a leopard gecko just got my first one yesterday (putting pics up later!) just having a bit of an issue with the temp of the viv. I think I need a smaller heat mat just wanted to check, what should the differences be between the hot and cool side ?

Thanks in advance

Dan :D

cool side should be fine at room temperature, hot side should be between 88-95*F. Your heat mat should cover approx. 1/3rd of your tanks floor surface.

I can't seem to keep my temps low enough. The floor temp on the hot side is nearing 100. I currently have about 12 layers of paper towel as well as reptile carpet. I know a thermometer is the best way but I can't afford it until I receive my income tax refund mid-February. Is there anything else I can do?

Tape down a couple layers of cardboard on the inside of the tank covered with the repti carpet or a ceramic tile until you can get a rheostat or thermostat installed. You can also pick up a pretty inexpensive thermostat at reptile direct for under $30.00 http://www.reptiledirect.com/reptitemp500rthermostat.aspx but you get what you pay for there. There's a bit of a temp swing from what you set it to go off or on at and what it actually does. Anywhere from 2-5 degrees frm what I'ev seen other users post. or a rheostat http://www.reptiledirect.com/reptitemprheostat.aspx

either way you're going to be able to have a little better control over your temps once you figure out the variable degree swing.
