Water gel question!

Recently I decided to switch from veggies to water gel (Fluker's Cricket Quencher in particular. SAME DIFFERENCE!) for my superworms. I realized that for some reason they were no longer eating the potatoes or carrots and instead were eating each other regardless of the quantity or quality of the assessable veggies.

The water gels have solved the cannibalism problem BUT I worry the water gel is making the substrate too moist and it is a pain to clean it out from the superworm bin.

I was thinking about just using a shallow dish in the bin to place to water gel on but I wonder if this is a good idea. A dish means no assess from the bottom and I do not want cannibalism again just because the worms on the bottom are too stupid to find water. (They prove themselves stupid in find fresh veggies!!)

Advise?? Opinions??

for my mealworm colony, i took bottle caps, filled them with the gel, and placed the bottle cap down in the substrate, so the gel is visible, but the cap is submerged. Although i wouldnt reccomend cricket quencher because it molded in my mealworm colony in less than 16 hours. But you can still use it, it doesnt rot like produce. Personally, im looking forward to the fluker's orange cube. it isnt as jelly like as the quencher, but its still a moisture source and a vitamin source. I ordered a 12 oz bottle, supposed to get it soon. But carrots are one of the best if not the best things u can use for moisture source. I find that the beetles love the carrots, and they are dry on the outside, so the substrate wont get wet. Good luck!
