Instead of buying "water gel" or "Water crystals" is there any substitute such as clear gelatin that would work exactly the same that i can get a grocery store?

The Water Crystals are actually cheaper than Gelatin for the Amount of Final product you get.

Depending on how much you go through. 1oz Of Dry Crystals makes about 1 Gallon of Hydrated Crystals. For $1 thats not bad.

I agree with Paco. Water crystals is the way to go. At $1 per oz. and the amount of water that you can make, you can't beat it. You also don't have the problems of drowning crickets. I have been using it for about two months now and have yet to loose a cricket due to drowning.
