I got a new gecko today. Capone is 3 months old, about 5 inches and 11 grams and definitely male. The person that had him before me kept him on purple colored sand, and now he has a purple wax like substance on his feet and his tail looks to be stained purple. I just got him so I really dont want to handle him, but I dont know if the wax is harmful to him or not, should I attempt to take it off? Here's a picture:

when I received my boy, maverick, he was kept on blue calci-sand that had the same exact effect on him. I gave him a warm soak which got rid of the waxiness after I rubbed his toes a little, and the staining went away after a few sheds. your new gecko should be just fine, but still keep an eye on him! good luck! :D

Based on the placement, that could also be retained shed skin (with sand particles making it purple). The treatment for that is the same (warm soak, rubbing gentle with fingers or cotton swab to remove). That sort of constriction can cause the gecko to lose some toes though, so be prepared if that is the case and watch for infection.

How do you guys get stuck shed off skittish leos? I tried to soak his feet and wipe with a q tip but he was not having it. He freaked out, bit me, the tried to jump out of my hand. I put him in his moist hide (which hes never used) but he ran right out.
