Whats the best way to keep small amounts of wax worms, like 50? In the fridge? Out of the fridge? How long do they last out of the fridge before turning into whatever they turn into? Right now I just have them out of the fridge in some gutload with carrots. They only eat a few a week, so maybe in the fridge is best? It seems like a lot of them died before the geckos could eat them.

I keep mine on the window sill between the window and curtain which seems to keep them cool enough but not cold enough to kill them (as far as winter goes) since the first batch i placed in the fridge (in the butter tray) all died pretty quickly.

I always seem to have a high mortality rate with waxworms. I try to feed them ASAP. When I'm trying to keep them around I keep them in our cold storage room. It's not as cold as a fridge but still colder than room temperature. I would guess around 60 F. They still don't last long and turn black or grey quite fast.

I always coat the waxworms with Herptivite before feeding them off. It sticks real well to the worms and allows the geckos to get some benefit from the waxworms.

WAX WORMS. COME IN MANY COLORS?

WAX WORMS COME IN DIFFERENT COLORS.......BLACK SEEMS TO POP UP QUICKLY AND MY GECKO'S WON'T EAT THE BLACK ONES. CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO GET THEM TO EAT BLACK ONES? THEY DON'T SEEM TO LIKE THE HARD COCOONS EITHER. NOR DO THEY LIKE OVERLY COLD LIFELESS GUNKY, LEAKY ONES......I've tried all types of things I've read on them.....HERE IT IS :
TO KEEP THEM FOR EXTENDED TIME (WHATEVER THAT IS) TEMP. SHOULD BE AT 50 to 60 degrees.....FRIDGE IS TO COLD UNLESS YOU HAVE AN EXTRA OR TURN THE TEMP. UP ON THE PEOPLE FOOD A BIT. (AND WATCH IT) THEY SAY MAYBE THE BUTTER COMPARTMENT IN THE DOOR MIGHT WORK. BUT AS I FOUND OUT,NOT ALL DO..........ALSO READS LOW HUMIDITY A MUST, THATS WHY THEY COME IN DRY WOOD CHIPS.. SAYS WAX WORMS DON'T EAT AT ADULT STAGE...I TRIED TO KEEP THEM FOR THAT EXTENDED TIME IN THE CABINET, UNDER THE SINK......TEMP. WAS GREAT, HUMIDITY VERY HIGH AND TOOK ITS TOLL QUICKLY ON 1000. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET GECKO'S TO EAT BLACK ONES? OH, I ASKED THAT ALREADY. ......................................
HERE IS A FEW COMMENTS ON THE SERIOUS SIDE FROM MY INVOLVEMENT TIME KEEPING, TRYING TO " EXTEND THEIR LIFETIME, AND EVEN TRYING TO RAISE THEM..........OH YEAH, ANYONE BEEN ABLE TO FEED THEIR GECKOS THE MOTHS?.......ME EITHER............................................
50 to 60 degrees, low humidity, I SLICE CARROT in rounds and add lots in with the waxes...at this time I am trying only carrots ( No Wood Chips or anything else) and even though my testing this way is not completed, I am finding good results. If they are not eating it they are sure clinging to it and looking white and plump. But I AM NOT AN AUTHORITY ON THEM and I TRY AS THE ONE FORUM COMMENTER SAID TO " FEED THEM QUICKLY FOR LESS LOSS." MY GECKO'S WILL BACK OFF EATING OTHER STUFF WHEN THEY ARE GETTING THEIR RUN OF WAX WORMS.........BUT I NEVER HAVE ANY TROUBLE GETTING THEM TO EAT OTHER FOOD TYPES AFTER THEIR RUN ON WAX WORMS. I THINK ALL FOODS FOR YOUR GECKO ARE DECIDED BY WHAT THE FOOD-STUFF IS FED. FOR INSTANCE MY MEAL WORMS GET CHICK STARTER + BRAN AND MOISTURE COMES FROM CARROT, PINEAPPLE, ORANGE. ..(RARELY POTATO) although it will work......THE SAME WITH CRICKETS * note if you feed crickets you may want to look for a write-up on my findings on Feeding Crickets and possible complications. It will be posted soon, as I finish my observations........I HOPE THIS HAS HELPED SOME WAY BUT IF NOT I HOPE YOU GOT A LITTLE HUMOR From IT.
