We've got some stuck toes

Been a while since I have been one, but things have been going well. Eggo shed a couple days ago and has 5 or 6 rear toes with skin still on them. He is still using his moist hide and it seems to be getting looser. More has been coming off.

I tired a warm soak last nite, but he's still not all that used to be handled and I don't want him to drop his tail. I see some things about mineral oil to help remove.

Any extra advice on how to get this stuff off with limited stress? What other things should I be watching for or be concerned about at this point?

Thanks!!

Imo 5-6 days is a long time to go with stuck shed on lil toes. Sounds like you're doing things right with teh warm bath and keeping the humidity up. Honestly there isn't a lot you can do that isn't gonna stress the leo a bit but you'dbe surprised how much they tolerate when it comes to stress and not dropping their tails. Try having to work stuck shed OFF a tail and worry about losing the tail.

What I did when Eros had a bad shed and some stuck on his toes was to soak him in a tupperware dish up to his belly constantly cycling the water to make sure it stayed warm. Make it so it is not noticable cold when you put your hand in it. I usually like to say around what we would shower in but not knowing how hot or cold you like your shower that could backfire. While you're soaking him (which I would do 2x a day for about 20 minutes each soak) is about every 5 minutes or so take him out and hold him and use a wet q-tip to try and gently rub the shed off his toes. It'll take a little work but it should come off. Eros' stuck shed didn't take much work and came off the first soaking. I would also apply mineral oil after his soaks while the skin is soft and vunerable to ensure the stuck shed doesn't dry out and constrict his toes. Watch out for discoloration of his toes, bruised looking purple-ish or darker than normal are worrisome and could indicate lack of blood flow/constriction.

So that's what I've done in the past to help my leo. Hopefully some of the more experienced keepers will chime in with some other suggestions if I'm off base.

Hey Thanks. That's what I was I was thinking. I am going to work on soaking again tonite and use some oil. The skin is definitely lose and coming off, but I just don't want to make it wait and possibly turn into something bed.

And Dog Shrink I think I also know you from a popular dog forum. ;)

Haha you very well may know me from a couple very popular dog forums. I've been banned from the best of them (usually for no good reason btw). What was your handle there?

As for the leo, yeah I wouldn't want to wait either. T he sooner yuo get it off the better. I highly doubt your leo will lose it's tail to be honest. They usually only drop if something grabs their tail or really really startles them and at that it's more the juvies you gotta worry about from what I've read.

Just to add to dog shrinks post- after his soak keep him on your lap and with a wet qtip gently roll the qtip over his toes.that also works with the least amount of stress.

Thanks for that! It's going to be fun trying to get him to hold still for that. I have a BIG tall tupperware container that holds half a full sized watermelon I am going to use for his soak. That way I have a chance of keeping him in there.

I actually used the lid on the tupperware dish I had to put Eros in and just snapped it on kinda lightly. He calmed right down after a couple minutes. Must have thought it was a safe hide or something. He didn't feel as vunerable with the lid on. I thought I mentioned about the q-tip thing in post #2 ... Just when using the q-tip go from the foot down the toe... with teh grain so to speak... I noticed when I did it on Eros if I ran from teh toe up the foot he didn't like/tolerate that so much.

I remember MoosMom... how's your puppers doing?

Well we had great success! I put my heating pad under the container and the water stayed nice and warm He actually enjoyed it I think. All the dead skin is gone and the toes seem normal. No discoloration.

Ahh.. Yoshi is almost 2 now. He's 100lbs to boot.

As far as Eggo goes... I think that's a cute name :D

It was my 4 year olds birthday gift. Ive been telling him since he was born "When you can say you want a gecko for your birthday you can have one" Welllllllll....with enough asking "do you want a gecko for your birthday?" He said it and now we have Eggo, he named it.

No one believes me when I say I got it for him. Can't imagine why.

Aw that's so cute. How is the 4 yr old with Eggo? Does he handle him at all? I'm still kinda nervous about letting my 6 yr old handle mine. IDK why he handles 14 yr olds ball python just fine. Maybe 'cause Eros is a jumper.

He actually does well. I make him sit on the floor and be quiet. I mostly just let Eggo walk over his hands. My boy just loves him. He always comes running to tell me " Eggo is out!!" Then I have to go look, every time. We also have 2 tarantulas that he helps me feed. He gets a kick out of that. Oh and there is the meal worm colony that he helps me sort. He already understands the stages of bug development because of that. He calls them "Puka"(as in puke-a) LOL.

LOL that's TOO cute. Myu older boy was like that with bugs. He was gonna be the last great entomologist. You should tel lil dude he can call the pupa Aliens... see how that strikes his fancy :) Good for you for getting lil dude into non-traditional animals at such a young age. I think that's great. Idk about the trantulas tho... they'd freak me out. Can't imagine how a lil guy would handle that but I guess if raised around it... they do ok.

Its funny that he loves the tarantulas, but a snake in a pet store, forget it. He doesn't want anything to do with it. Which is OK the other half doesn't like them either and I have been asked not to get one. So much for my corn snake plans. Maybe I will add some roaches to the bug city I already have!
