yes. the egg evolved as a method of reproduction long before geckos (or chickens) existed.

It depends whether you meant an egg, or a gecko's egg.
I guess they found out that for the chicken one, if you think of it as a chicken's egg, the substance that makes the shell of a chicken's egg comes only from a chicken's ovaries, so the chicken would have had to come first. I'm going to assume there's a similar thing with geckos as most species have different type eggs.
