What can brown do for me......

First they can start be pulling their heads out of their butts and get everyone on the same page. I'm not sure if this should be over in rants & raves but here's what happened;

I go to deliver a package that I'm shipping to a customer and decided to deliver in person to my local UPS hub, something I do on occasion. It started going downhill the minute I left the house. I was driving down a country road when out of nowhere I hit a Red-Tailed Hawk who ended up only hitting my windshield wiper with it's talons and took half of it with him. Now after a change of underwear, I get to the hub and hand my package over to the lady at the counter ( get your head out of the gutter, that's not what I meant). I'm almost out the door when she calls me back and hands me back the box and say's, yep you guessed it, " we don't accept live animals" and proceeds to point over to a poster on the wall ( which looks like it's been up since the Carter administration) that lists all things not allowded. I told her to check their website and it would tell her that I could ship them and that they were an allowdedanimal to ship through UPS. She tells me that it's up to the site supervisor whether or not to allow any live animals to be shipped, which evidentually at this site they will not do. If this supervisor doesn't want to allow live animals, then they don't have to reguardless of what the UPS site states. My question is, who the hell is running UPS??? Last time I checked their were big brown trucks passing through the place and a big UPS sign hung above the door. From what I got today is that they( hub) must not be regulated by UPS, but instead they are managed soley by site supervisors who I guess make up their own rules and regulations. I understand that UPS stores are independants and can set their own standards, but from what I understand a hub is in direct correlation with corporate UPS. What is on UPS's website should be the standard at ALL hubs.
Well by this time I pretty pissed off and explain that I have a certified account with them to ship reptiles, that I've shipped through this hub before ( funny thing is the guy that I normally hand the packages to was standing next to this lady and had the nerve to deny ever accepting packages labeled live anything before), and I have had drivers from that hub do pick-ups from my house with no problems. She then tells me to contact my local Rep. and have them contact this hub in order for them to send the package through. Well this hub closes at 7:00 p.m and it's now 6:40 p.m., so I jump on the phone and am put on hold for 20 minutes just to be told an email has been sent to my local Rep. and that she would contact me in the morning ( if it were only possible to reach through the phone:evil: ). Meanwhile a call was put in to this hub to let the package process through this time, which made me somewhat happy.
Now I get to start tomorrow by complaining to my Rep. about all this. This incident won't make me bail on them only because I have had very few issues with them in the past and those issues were always dealt with rather promptly. I just wish they can get all their employees on the same page when it comes to shipping live animals so I don't have to keep hearing that line again.
As far as hitting that hawk with my car, I for some reason seem to only be able to run over things that fly. I have also hit an owl along with numerous birds ( many fly into the grill and become wedged only to find them when cleaning the car). When I hit the Owl, the road was slightly higher than a fence row I was driving along. It took off and flew horizonally across the street and right into the car. God what's next, a Bald Eagle:main_rolleyes:

That sucks, Shawn. Sorry to hear you got the ol' nobody-knows-what-the-heck-is-going-on routine. That's one thing I'll never understand about the shipping companies. Haven't they ever heard of an inter-office MEMO that would keep everyone on the same page? Sheesh...

I ran over a wild turkey once while going 55-60. Those things are a lot bigger than they look!

The first time I went to ship out a gecko, through UPS, I pretty much got the same thing. However in my case they made a quick call and corp told them yes geckos were ok. The lady at the counter had handed me a laminated sheet with the regulations for shipping live animals, while she had made the call. On there no where did it say that you can not ship a gecko. It talked about venomous snakes and no live animal with a value over $15,000. Well that rules out my leo as being something they don't ship. When she got the ok, I had her look at the sheet she gave me to look at, and she said "OH!"...LOL I guess she never read it. Well I have never had a problem since. Mater of fact when I come in they say "Hey it's the gecko lady!" and "What are you shipping today?" LOL

Knock on wood... I have been very pleased with UPS as my carrier, and have had very few issues. I know what you mean though... sometimes it's like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing!

Sorry you had such a frustrating day!!!!
My UPS store knows who I am - there are only two people that work there. They are even gentle with the box (when I'm there anyway). I dread the thought of going anywhere else to ship for fear of getting less cooperative help.

Well I heard back from my Rep the other day and she talked to the supervisor at that hub and straightened everything out. She say's I should'nt have anymore problems from now on:)

Nancy, I'm glad atleast one UPS Store is cool about letting reptiles through their facility. Every store I had contacted by me won't even touch the package. I had even gotten into an arguement with an owner once, but this was before I had found out that they are independants and could set their own rules when it came to shipping live anything.

My UPS store knows what is up. Only once was I refused, but then they notice how Im there when the driver is, and I can hand it to him instead if they give me a problem at all again. :p They dont even bother with it now!

I tried calling the store today and I got the "We can't ship live animals." I called another store and the same thing except she gave me a number to call. That number didn't do diddly. Does anyone know what I can do to find a place?

Sorry it is too late now. Well so you know, once you have your label and every bit of adress/payment info on there, you can give a package to the driver. Go to that UPS store, and ask what time does the driver pickup. Then go to that location a little early, to give the package to the driver himself.

Ha! UPS store "rules" :D

So if I wanted to try Fedex now, would I just walk into the store with the gecko?

Try writing fragile and/or perishable on it, along with arrows showing which side to face up. I have seen this done many times without any issues. Just don't say it's a live animal in the box.
