I have had an easy 1,000 in it at a time. But you could have more in that in there if you want. Make sure they have their oats, wheat germ and put other things in there for the mealworms to eat.
This is a 12 qt. that I raise them in. Contains : Hen layer crumbles, carrots, Some oranges but mostly skins...........I don't separate the life cycles.
Estimate it contains 8,000 beetles, 10,000 worms of all sizes, + eggs???.......works well with little smell......every few days mist a couple times.....Works best and least trouble for ME....worms all the time...Take care / HJ
What you will need:
1. Large tupperware container (flat)
2. Box Cutter
3. Hot Glue Gun
4. Screenining (I buy mine at walmart and it comes in a big roll. It is used for replacing window screens. You will find it in the home improvement section.)
Cut squares out of the top of the tupperware container (with box cutter) and cut and hot glue screen to cover the cut outs. It looks nice and it provides good ventilation. Then just add your oatmeal or whatever you are using and you can add your mealies.
