What do you use for substrate in a "leo display" tank

I keep my leos in tubs but I have an empty 40 gal breeder and id like to put a trio in it for display(my mellow females). So I bought some sand and hate it.
I dont really like repti carpet either, seems expensive since Id need a couple pieces to switch out each time.

I do have a UTH too so a thick substrate is out.But I also have a low watt CHE for ambient air temps.

I would like it to look natural, maybe desert scene, I dont want to mess with homemade rock walls or anything like that though.
I have access to lots of slate, nice big pieces any thickness and was hoping to use this somehow.
Any ideas or help would be awesome.

I do like the tile look.Do you use small pieces or the big ones cut to fit?
I was also thinking about getting some of that excavator clay and playing around with that to see what it would look like.I dont like the color though, its so red and the slate I have is grey.

I actually just use one large tile (I think it's 9"x 12") on the hot side. Then paper towels on the cool side as that's where all mine poo. Then clean up is really easy!

Well I do want a display type cage, something that looks really nice. Im going to order that excavator clay and play with that and see if it will work in part of the tank.
I actually now have two 40 gallons and I bought a double stand so I can put something in the bottom one too.
Ive never been a big fan of aquariums but with good insulation on the back and under neath they can work quite well.

They have this new "sand" looking foam tile that is put on the bottom of the tank, its a bit pricy but is supposed to be washable and really does look like sand.
Im tempted to order some, maybe do a review on it.
Down side is its red, what is up with all the sand or fake rock products all having that red clay look. You'd think they would come in a few colors.
