I originally started keeping animals (personally, the family has always had some cat or dog) a little over a year ago with a small female betta in a TINY little tank. Since then things have changed quite a bit and I thought I should share them on here.
This is my 5g bowfront, occupied by the betta that started it all and four black kuhli loaches, which are an absolute blast to watch.
About eight months back I was lucky enough to acquire a 55g tank for $55 from a certain large chain store :main_rolleyes: which quickly became this FOWLR (Fish only with live rock) saltwater tank, right now it has a Bar Goby, Three-Stripe Damsel, Blue Damsel, and Dwarf Coral Beauty occupying it. The filtration/circulation equipment consists of 60 lbs of rock, a Penguin Bio-Wheel 350 filter (meant for a 70g tank), two Maxi-Jet 900 and one 600 powerhead. I was also lucky enough to get my hands on a used Instant Ocean protein skimmer with Maxi-jet 1200 powerhead for only $10, bringing the total gallons per hour rollover in the tank to 1295 GPH (at least according to all the boxes, its probably only about 1000). So far the only problem I have had was due to two clownfish dying of velvet, I couldn't save them because the LFS was closed for two days , but the tank did receive a copper treatment afterwords.
I did try a 29 gallon freshwater tank in the past and had continuous problems with disease and death, that tank has been cleaned and converted over to a terrarium that can be seen in this post: http://geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=76718
Also, here is a pic of the little monster's tank (Little monsters being Red Claw Crabs):
