Hey everyone,

I am new to the whole keeping and breeding roaches for food craze. I have a Colony of Dubia right now which is great! I have seen on many other forums people keep other types of roaches rather then Dubia and i always wondered why. So im asking other gecko keepers as to why they keep the roaches they do and for what reasons specifically.

I keep the Dubia because they were suggested to me by many people, since im new to them i figured a slower moving species that doesn't climb smooth surfaces great so i would have less chance of a accident and escapes. I was told if they got loose this specie of roach wouldn't infest my home do to the lower temps and low humidity.

I rather enjoy keeping these little guys lots of personality active feeders and very easy to care for and don't cause much of a mess. my only issue keeping them is im having the worst time getting the temp in their bin to come even in the ball park of 90.

so now id like to hear from other people who keep maybe other species of roach or even if you keep dubia why and how do you keep them?

I keep both dubia and lateralis. I started with dubia because they're suppose to be the starter roach that are the least freaky to human who don't like bugs. The only thing I don't like about them is that they grow too fast; and I prefer to feed my geckos smaller food items, so I decided to try out the lats. So far, I like the lats more than the dubias. I like how they're smaller and have a very soft shell. Breeding is also very easy, they are extremely prolific. I have about 40 adults in a small breeder bin; I pick out the egg cases every second day and incubate them in a separate container. To give you some numbers, I collect about 20 eggcases every 2 days, and each of them will hatch out 10-15 babies. More than enough for my 13 geckos. The only downside is that they can climb a bit better than dubias; generally, they can't climb vertical surfaces, but if the container has grit on it, then they will be able to get a grip and climb out. They are fast too, but I'm ok with that. If you can catch a cricket with jump legs with tweezer, you'll have no problem picking out the lats.
