What sex is worth more?

I realize that males of any newer morph tend to be worth more since they can be bred to multiple females, and I thought male RAPTORs were still selling for more than females. I recently saw someone asking more for females than males though. Has the morph become common enough that females are now in higher demand? Assuming you had 2 identical-looking RAPTORs to choose from, would you think a male or female was worth more?

With geckos, I don't think the price varies much...it's usually the expression of the gecko that makes it worth more....so with that being said, since males are incubated at a higher temp, which makes the colors brighter, they may be worth a tad bit more than a female...But like I said, I think it's more-so the color and pattern of an animal that makes the price.

Some breeders sell more males than females, so the females in their collection up for sale may be listed at a higher price.

Other breeders are more female-heavy and will sell a limited amount of males, which makes them cost more.

That's just our thought on it...

alot of times with new morphs a breeder will sell females first. this makes males worth more because they can be breed to multiple females and produce large amounts of babies to breed back to the father. where as with a female you can only breed them once or twice per season. usually once. and it's hard to choose what male you want to breed to that female sometimes. where as a male you don't really have to choose you can breed him to alot of females. then once the breeder starts producing males he sales his excess females and the process goes on and on. untill the morph is so common that the price goes way down. i remember when the raptors came out and i remember seeing some for almost $3000 now you can pick one up for close to $300 sometimes even lower.

Some morphs the females are in higher demand than others and in some cases the demand exceeds the supply ;)

I think it can go either way. For high-end stuff, males are more, and for low-end stuff, females are more.
Whatever morph you have you need a good male for any project, and then you can breed many many many females to a single male [we were cycling our RAPTOR male through like 20 females at one point]
Females can be housed together in groups, and males need to be housed singly, but a male can breed many females, and girls can only breed one male, and produce x amount of babies. Of course you want to invest in a quality breeder male, but you are also going to need to rack up a bunch of girls to breed him to.

A perfect example would be Like a super snow bell project.
You drop 800$ + on a SS bell male, and then you get a bunch of snow bell females, and snow het bells, and bells, breed them all to that male.

When you look side-by-side, a snow het bell male would be worth LESS [imo] then a snow het bell female, because the female can be bred to something high end, and whats the point with a male? You wouldnt breed a low end het to a SS bell female, its just not practical.

I would take that project, and incubate everything for female. If I wanted to keep that project, I would have all of my female offspring, and then I could invest in yet another, unrelated male*, and cross him to all of the girls I already have. [Like a bell snow enigma, or a snow enigma het bell, or if I was made of $$ a ss bell enigma hahah]

*thats assuming you dont inbreed, which, I personally try as hard as humanly possible not to do

I am the type of person, who relies on people who think males are worth more, and so it is more effective to incubate for male. I am also the type of person who cant give away low-end males [crested geckos are a perfect example] No one [that I know of] ever buys reverse trios, or worse. "Hi I would like a group of 8.1 het blah blah blah" Thats just silly, if the female retains the sperm then you only have 1 males genetics anyway, and even if you pair her with another male 1/2 way through the season, then who knows what the offspring could be, and you would have a hell of a time explaining what the babies are. People need unrelated breeders, including myself. So I will always try for girls and trade for boys. Girls r teh roxxorz.

I know this was about RAPTORs and I got kindof OT with the bells haha. I decided to go with something that not everyone and they mama has. + Recessive/dominant combos = teh awesome. To answer your question, I already have a breeder male RAPTOR, and an unrelated male RAPTOR, so I personally dont have any interest in getting any more, and I think most people working with this morph are in the same boat. So I would buy girls, and then I would trade for boys from other people to get unrelated stock to breed that offspring to.

Edit: We got our RAPTORs from Tremper, a VERY short time after they came out, and paid $1600 for the pair, I cant imagine who in their right mind was selling RAPTORs for 3k.
