Winged, but flightless that I've seen and cannot climb smooth surfaces. Species?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure that they are Blaberus dubia. I think their common name is something like Guyana Spotted Roach. The roach also kind of looks like Blaberus fusca. Both of them have wings as adults and do not fly. I think the major difference between the two is that the dubia reach around 40-50 mm and the fusca reach 60-80 mm [I don't have my book in front of me so the sizes are a guess-timate]. I got my roaches long ago now from Blaberus.com, I would check out his site for more info.

I'd say Blaptica dubia! I have been looking at getting some for my leo's but GF says 'NO WAY'. Guess I need to order them anyway, probably start with 100.

I don't know where GF says, "No Way". There are several posts out their that go back and fourth about types to use, and many don't use them because they are afraid of touching a nasty roach, but there are many people out their that feed these and other roaches solely to their leos and other herps with great success.

give it a try.. I just ordered some myself.. It's worth a shot eh?:main_thumbsup:

Oh yeah, those are definitely - Blaptica Dubia AKA - "orange head roaches"

I researched and debated long and hard regarding acquiring some Lateralis to feed to my geckos but was turned off by the stories I started hearing about the odd escapee producing nymphs and eventually causing minor infestations.

Roaches are extremely hardy and can survive long periods of time in cool, dry environments without any food. Once they locate a warm spot in your house and find some form of food they begin reproducing.

I've heard from some people that were insanely careful when feeding these off but still found the odd one running free and even found nymphs in moist areas of the house.

If I had an area outside of my principal residence where I kept my geckos I would give them a try. I can't imagine the consequences of an extermination effort with a house full of animals.

Just my $.02...

I have a feeling that in this situation GF probably refers to Girl Friend, not Gecko Forums..... ;)
