So what is the big morph that everyone wants now? I know they go through cycles. Or are people just looking for something new and different?

I will say that I really like the snake-eyed geckos or the Marble eyed ones. Which sort of goes with Eclipse, hehe... and I find Enigma's fascinating. To bad my Tremper was only HET RAPTOR.

I am thinking that I should probably have more than one male, but if I buy another Gecko it probably won't be for a few months. I wish there was a reptile show around here in the near future :( It be fun to shop at one.

You're right, Carlos. By about the end of the season, a lot of folks have acquired their new geckos for next year. Then we make ourselves crazy planning, un-planning, and re-planning. Then sometimes go back to the original plan :)

This year I am just getting a feel for it. How much time out of my day it will really take, things like that. Then I'll decide if I want to continue or not. Of course the "or not" will depend a lot on how any I have vs how many I sell, etc. But, I figure it would be worth seeing what is popular in case I decide not to use my male and have to get another.

Thanks for the show head's up Michelle, I will be going :) Looks like fun.

What's popular & hot is a hard question to answer really. What's hot amongst breeders isn't necessarily what's hot & what sells well at trade shows. Just as what's hot amongst gecko enthusiasts are a lot different from what's hot for first time buyers.

There's some secret projects and breeding exchanges going on with the marble eyed genetics amongst breeders, and some new cool looks coming with W&Y's. But these cost way too much for anybody other than serious breeders. But they are hot amongst breeders that's for sure.

Lizard girl posted what she sold the most at trade shows, and they are usually the cheaper morphs like the snows and hypos.

Then of course you have somewhat hardcore gecko enthusiasts that will pay big money for some high quality genetics & looks, but they aren't geckos first time buyers would even consider.

So I think it's just up to what your target audience is, and what you do personally. Like me I'm a hobbyist going to small scale breed for the first season. There are geckos I own that I'm looking to breed & improve & sell. There are also geckos I own that I just had to have it for myself, because I think they look great regardless of what the market value calls for. Either way it should be fun :)

I have a few geckos that I have just because I like them. I will never breed them but they make a great pet and then there are geckos that I have bought because of their genetics for breeding projects. You have 3 possible target audiences 1) those who just want a pretty gecko as a pet 2) those who want to breed for a hobby so they want good looking geckos but not seriously expensive geckos and 3) breeders that want awesome genetics to add into their projects. You just need to find your target audience and find what they are buying and go from there.

I like this but I want to ad to it.
When you are first starting out you need to build up a reputation. So you actually have to start down at 1 and work your way up. You cant start at 3 and expect people to buy $1000 geckos from someone in their first year of breeding.
I recommend aiming low. Learn about breeding through lots of reading/research and a little trial and error. What works, what doesnt. Ask people on the forum. There are tons of helpful, knowledgeable people.

Dont spend hundreds on breeders. Buy what you like and can afford. Spend less than $100 a gecko to start.

Be prepared to deal with possible health problems and the possibility of having to put a gecko down. Also face the fact that breeding involves selling. You cant keep all the babies or you become a hoarder! >_<

Also invest in a SIM or GEO. These help SO MUCH with incubation!!!!

I was thinking of low, even if I somehow magically ended up with a Black or some crazy morph I still wouldn't feel that "right" selling 2k geckos. The first female I am breeding was a cheaper girl, a pretty basic Tremper though her HET RAPTOR should throw some interesting mixes in. I have two snows to add in (I'm not breeding my other two at all).

I know how hard the selling can be since I did dwarf hamsters for about a year! I was just selling to a petstore of sorts (not a traditional petstore) so was pretty free to just do whatever. I just played with colors, of course their genes are incredibly simple. The first few babies I had to sell made me sad though! After a little bit it got easier.
