on my racks i set up a 'dummy container' i cut a hole just large enough to slide the probe into the container, make sure to line the probe up in the center of the heat tape in the container. I have the dummy container much in the center of the rack as possible, if its 8 rows, i would place the dummy container either on row 4 or 5, id personally go with row 4 since heat rises the top container will the warmest, so id cheat 1 row down to try to compensate for the heat on the bottom row;-)

I agree that I put the probe in a dummy container and generally in the center of the rack. Unless I have a questionable shelf that I want to test for awhile. A temp gun helps a lot as well.

I dont mess with night drop stuff, I beleive there are other species of reptiles that it might be importaint to, but I dont feel its anything worth worrying about for geckos. Geckos are pretty simple to breed, just check for ovulation, if the female is AT LEAST 50 grams and ovulating, and the male is AT LEAST 40-45 grams, pair them and let them do their thing.
