Can someone give me some advice about where I can buy tiles for a second level I want to create for my two leopard geckos? I've heard that tiles make a good basking surface (as we have an overhead heat source, and I want to make sure Chief and Nugget have a place to warm up before winter comes (I live in Connecticut)

I am looking for ceramic tiles, correct? It seems like a lot of places only have vinyl tiles (for kitchen/bathroom use). Are there store around that sell ceramic tiles?

Thanks!

I just got mine from Home Depot. Mine are slate 12" tiles. Pretty thick and about $2 each. The 12 inch might be bigger than what you are looking for, but you can hang them over a concrete step and hammer on the tile where it meets the ledge of the step and get it to break somewhat straight across. Yes, they do indeed make a good basking surface.

Thanks! I'm going to head to HD or Lowes after work and pick up some tiles and wood to create the loft. Do you have any experience with the self-adhesive tiles? are they safe?

No, I don't. I would recommend using non-toxic adhesive if possible though. Try to use stuff designed for children/babies as much as possible. You never know when something will crack/flake/peel of and get ingested. Just my $0.02.

I buy my slate tiles from Home Depo and I cut my own tiles.
I don't like ceramic tiles, because many have a really smooth, slippery surface which won't give the gecko anything to hold onto.

I like slate because it looks natural and has a textured surafce but I feel any tile with a textured surface would be good. =]

I got my 2 12 inch ceramic tiles (with a rough face) from Home Depot and my uncle cut them to size for me. It's been fantastic; a much better temp. gradient.

I just bought some tiles from Lowes ($0.88 per 6X6 tile). I had to get a guy at Lowes to cut the tile to size since they don't exactly sell the exact sizes I needed to fit a 10 gallon 20"X10" and painted them with Rust-oleum Stone textured paint and coated with a polyurethane. I'm pretty happy with how it came out :). That was the first thing I've DIY-ed for the vivarium. I want more ideas! :-D
