A 40 gallon breeder or a 55 gallon?
not much difference really.. just a couple inches in height.. so which ever
The 44 gal
36"L x 18"W x 16"H
50 gal
36 7/8 x 19 x 19 5/8

The 40 gal breeder
36"L x 18"W x 16"H
50 gal
36 7/8 x 19 x 19 5/8
So:
40 Breeder: 36 3/16 x 18 1/4 x 16 15/16
55 Gallon: 48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21
You get more floorspace for the 55 gallon it seems, so I'd go with that

A 40 breeder will provide a wider floor space. Traditional 55s tend to be long and narrow. Given the terrestrial nature of leos, I'd lean towards the 40. IF you have the space and money to spend, I'd even go a little further in degree of floorspace and opt for a 75. I absolutely love 75s for a "large", non-custom display cage.
Actually...no.
40 breeder = 36 3/16 (round to 1/4) x 18 1/4 x 16 15/16 (round to 17) That's Length x Width X Height
55 Gallon = 48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21
Length x width = area (in this case square inches)
A 40 breeders has a floor space of 661.5625 square inches. If you use 36 3/16 you get 660.421875 square inches.
A 55 gallon has a floor space of 615.1875 square inches.
Rounding the 40's length up 1/16 inch, you get a surface area difference of 46.375 square inches or 46 3/8. Keeping with the 3/16 you get a difference of 45.234375 square inches or 45 15/64.
