I was feeding my leopard gecko, Speedy Lucy, tonight, and I noticed that her eye was a little funky looking. It has some junk in it, and I can't see the normal color in her eye. It looks almost black. I don't think it is swollen very much. I am attaching picture of each eye. This is our first gecko, and we don't know all that much about them. Please advise! Thanks in advance!

looks like she has some stuck shed on her toes as well. is she being kept on sand by chance? i would try to use saline drops to irrigate the eye. make sure she has a good moist hide in her enclosure to help with sheds as well. it honestly could be some stuck shed on her eye.

It really could be anything.. a piece of shed, a bacterial infection, a laceration of some sort, or if she's being kept on sand, it could be an abrasion from a sand particle. I would agree with Shawn and use a drop of saline solution in both her eyes 3x a day for the next 3 days. If you dont see any improvement at all after that time, then I would take her to a knowledgeable herp vet. If by the end of the three days it has improved some, keep up with the saline for another 4-7 days. By this time if it's not nearly or completely better, I would also recommend a vet visit. Does she have a moist hide in her enclosure? I see she's missing toes and has new stuck shed on her foot. From the pic of her left eye, I'm going to go ahead and say that she could also be dehydrated. It looks a bit sunken in but then again, the camera can trick you sometimes in photos. Nonetheless, they need good humidity and sometimes a little help with tough sheds. Good luck with your lovie :)

Yes, we keep her in sand. Didn't know any better. That's what the pet store said. We've had her for 2 years. She's not missing any toes, but does have shed on her feet. What do you suggest for a moist hide? I'm really just an amateur!

i use ziplock sandwich containers with a hole cut out of the lid. put some damp orchid moss in it and place it on the cool side of the enclosure. you can also use moist paper towels in the container. sand can cause impaction and can kill a leo very fast. i would suggest paper towels or tiles as substrate. pet stores usually tell people to use sand because they sell the sand. its more for their profit rather than the correct husbandry of the animal you are buying. but that's for another thread, lol.

mine has the same issue going on right now. i'm pretty ashamed to say i had been lazy for a while and it cost him a few toes to stuck shed(s) that went unnoticed. will the "reptile shedding aid" spray do anything to help an eye like that? it's been helping with stuck sheds pretty well.

looks like an eye cap (shed stuck) in the eye to me. need to use some gecko friendly eye ointment with mineral oil to softern it up so it can be gently removed.

Hi everyone

I was actually going to post a picture of my leo with a sore eye too...not sure if I should have started a new thread or not!

I have taken my leo to a local vet (not reptile vet) and she has been on Fucithalmic Vet eye drops but it doesn't seem to have helped. I'm guessing I need to take her to a reptile vet now but just thought I'd check on here first.

Her eye has been on and off a bit funny for a month now. In the beginning sometimes it seemed perfectly fine, just the top lid having a weird shape, and other times completely closed. Her top lid appears a funny shape, with a weird curve in it. The bottom lid appears to have some scrapes / shed / be quite red.

See pictures attached...any ideas?

Btw...my leos aren't on sand and they do have moist hides

Thanks,

Lezlea
