I'm thinking about switching from paper towel to slate but it seems like it won't be as warm bc the slate is obviously much thicker, what do you guys think?

Slate tile is an excellent thermal conductor. The only problem is that most tiles have a raised grid underneath that will form air pockets that cut down on the heat transfer. You can use a thin layer of sand under the tile to help fill in the gaps in order for the heat to conduct. Also, don't use the smooth, glazed tiles since it is hard for the geckos to get traction when they move around.

Do you have a heat gun? That'll let you check to make sure you are getting the right temps along the floor.

I have tiles in the cage, but still throw paper towels down. Even with the raised grid I get proper temps.
