Worried about my gecko

Hey guys, so I had to rescue a leopard gecko a few days ago. I have fallen in love with the little guy already, but I am extremely worried.

To give you some background, my friends room-mate moved out and left the gecko there, with no food or anything. My friend tried taking care of it by feeding it crickets every few days, but they were extremely large, and there were dead cricket bodies all over the cage. Fast forward one week later, I now have the gecko home with me. The guy who owned it before me did not take care of it AT ALL. Its in an enclosure with a normal incandescent light that he left on for months, sand substrate, only one hide, and fecal matter all packed in the corner.

Now, I have never owned a gecko before but I have been learning very quickly via countless hours on the internet. I am tad worried about the little guy because he does not move at all, I have tried hand feeding him crickets with tongs (he did eat one). I have only seen him eat 2 crickets since I got him a few days ago. I have also purchased a red bulb for him, its about 100 watts and I got some thermometers as well, which read in the upper nineties on one side (the therms are right under the lamp) and no readings on the other side (theyre the cheap stick on thermometers). I plan on buying him a UTH and a thermostat come friday (amongst many other things for his inadequate aquarium) when I get paid, and I also plan on building him some proper hides that same day.

The thing that has me worried is, this little guy does not move. I mean, hardly at all. He will poke his head out of the little hide (which is in the center of the glass aquarium) but thats about it. I am also worried because I have not seen him poop, and I know hes eaten at least two crickets. The cricket thing also worries me, is this a normal amount? Hes about 5 or so inches. I did try to look at his belly to see if it was dark, he was a tad flighty so it was difficult to tell, but I didnt see anything. I have also only seen him drink water once. I have made sure to change his water every day though. I do also have a little dish of calcium that I tried dusting the crickets with, set beside his little hide.

I guess i'm just worried he's going to pass away before I can get the proper stuff for him. Does anyone know if I should have cause for concern right now? Thank you all very much in advance.

really nice of you to have taken him in:)

As for his behavior it's totally normal. Don't handle him for at least 2 weeks unless completely necessary to reduce stress.
I would remove the sand and replace it with paper towels for now. It will be a good idea to buy slate tiles when possible.
What supplements do you currently have?

The only supplements I have are "Leopard Gecko Dust by T-Rex". Not sure if it's worth anything or not. This would also be a good time to mention, if anyone has any specific brands for any specific products that work well, please let me know! I want the best for the little guy, he didn't ask for this.

It that the all in one product?

I just looked it up and it is, so I don't use the product myself but I have been told you can dust at every feeding and there is no need to keep the calcium dish inside the enclosure.
He will definately need a UTH.
Hot side 90-95 on the floor
Cool side 75-80
Humid Hide
1 hide in the cool side- one on the warm end
UTH stays on 24/7
Water dish
Thermometer with a probe
I think that covers most of it. Any questions?

I believe so, yes. I filled a little bowl with this stuff for him and put it by his hide a few hours ago, because I noticed him licking a few grains of sand. Which also has me super worried :(

Please Remove the sand right away. You don't want to leave the repashy product in his enclosure he can overdose. You can however leave plain calcium if you wish.

He is probably not eating due to stress which is normal. You can leave him a dish with a few dusted mealworms so that maybe he will help himself while you are sleeping. Don't leave any crickets inside the enclosure. If you can't get a hold of mealworms right away, then try offering him the crickets every other day to him time to adjust to his surroundings.

It might be a good idea not use the incandescent light. 100 watt bulb will give too much heat so he definately needs the UTH instead.

His tank needs some changes right away while he's rehabilitating. Dehydration is a common issue using sand and lights in a tank that size, it dries them out. Place the gecko in a container of warm shallow water and dump that sand! Put paper towels in the bottom, they will be soft for him and easy to keep clean. He needs a humid hide near or over the under tank heat mat (UTH). Get a digital probe thermometer to measure the floor surface over the UTH. Those round or strip stick on the side ones are very inaccurate and don't register the reading your gecko needs for proper digestion. Air temp is of no consequence, just the floor surface. Leave a dish of dusted mealworms close the opening of the hide he uses most. Do not leave the all in one supplement in the tank for him to lick. Don't worry if you don't have any plain calcium to leave in for him, it's not needed with the all in one supplement. Leave the light off unless needed only for brief periods, he doesn't need it and they can cause additional stress. Very minimal handling!

Just a thought if you are able to get a picture of him...he may be moving very little because he is neglected but also when these guys are neglected like this they develop bone issues due to lack of calcium. If he has MBD (bone disease) his movements may be limited.

Laney's got it on the head! You really need that UTH and Thermo Probe!! And the warm bath is a must, quarenteed he is dehydrated! Good Luck!

imo putting a gecko who is so stressed right now in water will make him eat less. Most geckos are scared of water. he just bought the heat bulb so he will not become dehydrated that fast and just cause he was on sand. He can walk because he walked to lick the dust out the dish and he has been sticking his head out. Sounds to me he is just stressed. of course take out the sand though.
