My nephew helps me care for my geckos and he always wanted one so I told him when he gets everything it needs I will buy him one so I was on a local site and saw someone selling 2 juvis. I talked the man for a couple of days and decided I would get one of his for my nephew. I went to his house to get one and I was in complete shock. he called himself a breeder but he had brother and sister housed together on calcium sand and to make it worse they had absolutely no heat I picked up the little boy and he was an ice cube. I know im in florida but im more north central florida and it was very cold today. I was able to talk him down in price and snatched that little guy up he is in a cage layed out flat and soaking up the heat. I was very interested in the female and wanted to buy her but while we were there the female jumped out of hands and smacked her head on the tank and just stood there As much as I wanted to grab her in run I was afraid I would buy her just to have her die. the mom and dad were housed together so he said they just keep mating. we were talking about other reptiles and got on the subject of iguanas and I said they were to much care for me and he said yeah with the lights and having to give them calcium. I said that does not bother me I dust my leos food and he said he does not have to cause they eat the sand then asked if I wanted to buy some and I said no thanks and told him I use tile and why and of course he just kept telling me how great the sand is. I wanted to grab all 4 of his leos and run. I told him a few things on my mind and left but I just keep thinking about those poor babies.

I know how you feel. I left this pet store watching the leo's wither away. I just bought a leo from that pet store. The little guy was kept on sand, he shared his hide with 3 other geckos and a few crix. He had no underbelly heat at all and his poo doesn't get cleaned. The water in his water bowl doesn't get cleaned. I know this because algae had a chance to grow in there. All the crix sharing the cage with him were all bigger than his head. The mealies inside are the size when they are about to putpate. I'm surprised this little guy lasted so long inside. He was the healthiest and the most alert one there. When ever I go up to his cage, he open one eye slightly to look at me.

So i bought him! :D

I know exactly how you feel. I wanted to buy all the geckos that the pet store here has to spare them. But I realized as soon as they have no more, they will get more in and then it would all start over again.
You did everything you could do, at least one is out and safe.

I would have let him know about the impaction. Possibly even show him pictures of what the sand can cause. Sometimes that is all it takes to make people realize more research has to be done.
