PLEASE take a few moments out of your day to watch this video and share it with your family and friends. Brian from BHB outlines how you can help fight this hateful and discriminatory bill proposal.

If this passes, THOUSANDS of families will lose everything they have, business will vanish, and we will no longer be able to keep, transport and breed the animals we have.

Can always trust Brian of BHB to make a good video! Thanks for posting that. The website makes it ridiculously easy for people to send a letter to their senator too. You don't even have to write a letter, since they've got a template for you.

you got it, guys! Thanks for doing your part to make sure our voices are heard. Regardless of how ridiculous this bill really is on paper... it's crucial that we make our presence know, and our voices heard.

Lets move this in a positive direction... keep up the great work!

I do have to admit I am getting nervous about this proposed reptile ban. it seem quit ridiculous I saw the PDF Kelli posted up here. I was wondering if their is anything I can do to help not pass this thing .

This is ruffly what I sent in my letter to my Rep. as well as giving them a call soon after seeing this thread. and sending e-mails to almost everyone in my contacts of Brians video and the no on hr669 site.

It almost seems un American like they don't realize how many people this will affect. not only personally but financially with their businesses. probably 10s of thousands of pet owners and thousands of businesses, talk about affecting the economy.

This law for many is like going against the American Dream it would kill my dreams of having a reptile breeding facility similar to what many in our community have, Marcia, Kelli and Steve, Steve Sykes, Garrick, Gregg Mr.T and so many others. I along with many others have been working towards this for years and years. they can't just tell us we have to find something else to do with our lives.

It would be taking our Individuality away. killing most of what we are. This can NOT happen. I believe it even bans parrots and many other things. So the Government is basically saying we can only keep dogs or cats. that seems ridiculous and I will not stand for it. Just because a few ignorant people thought they would try owning a snake and didn't want them anymore and released them, shouldn't mean it should effect all the hard working responsible reptile enthusiasts, hobbyists and herpetoculturist. the ladder whom make it their lives to work with these wonderful creatures.

Respectfully Submitted,

Although the first call I had to hang up because I goofed what I was supposed to say :D:main_laugh:

I didn't send the default letter because I felt that the wording was fairly harsh, it made some very big and somewhat baseless statements, and didn't present all of the issues I felt were important. As most of you know from how I've been writing in these threads, I've been carefully watching the progression of this legislation in regards to invasive species management. If any of you are interested, here is the letter I sent to my representative. Please note that it is heavily based upon Georgia, but I felt it was important to strike a familiar chord with my senator.

Vanessa Lane said:
Please join me in opposing H.R. 669, the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act. As a PhD student in wildlife, I understand more than most the impacts that invasive species have had on our native environment. However, a single piece of legislation that considers all exotic animal species as potentially invasive is far too broad, difficult to enforce, and begs to be broken.

I do believe that the draft of this legislation is a positive sign that awareness has been growing among our political figures and the public in general of the immense and severe impacts invasive species, particularly plants, have had in the United States. While H.R. 669 in its current stage is going to be met with great resistance from pet owners, I believe it is doing its job in stirring up the hornet's nest and making everybody acknowledge that the thoughtless importation and careless ownership of a few individuals is destroying native habitats.

Georgia already has among the most strict pet keeping laws in the United States in that no native species are to be kept as pets. This I wholly agree with, but only if people are given an alternative. H.R. 669 removes that alternative and will likely place a great strain on our native wildlife as people seek non-domesticated pets.

While I appreciate the daunting task of determining the status of every species currently in the United States, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and GA Department of Natural Resources, for the most part, understand which species have the potential to be or are already invasive. Legislation should focus on known problematic species and potentially ban the import of new species without careful assessment instead of banning all non-domesticated exotic pets that already exist within our borders.

In addition, I personally see the horticultural trade as being far more dangerous to our environment. Insects such as the woolly adelgid, gypsy moth, and Asian longhorn beetle were introduced to the United States through improper quarantine of imported plants and shipping crates. I'm sure you are well aware of the extensive damage of escaped 'garden' plants have already done to Georgia, including Chinese privet, Japanese honeysuckle, kudzu, Chinese wisteria, etc. For more information on exotic plant species, please visit this website: http://www.gaeppc.org/list.cfm. I believe we need to focus more on legislation preventing the introduction, spread, and thoughtless planting and promoting of invasive plant species in the horticultural trade.

Please do not pass H.R. 669 without addressing these flaws.
