Zilla Temperature Controller

I have a rhethostat and I HATE it! The temperature goes up and down in my room on a regular basis. I literally have to adjust the temperature 3 times a day. So I want a non expensive thermostat.

I was looking at the Zilla Temperature Controller and wanted to know if anyone has used it?

I also want to know is it really a thermostat... ?

i never used that one but i know any thermostat would work better then the reostat I would trust a drunken monkey before trusting a reostat. like i said i dont know anything about the zilla thermostat but i bought this one http://www.bigappleherp.com/BAH-1000-Thermostat?sc=2&category=15 and my temps have been great ever since. plus i couldnt tell if the zilla dial is just marked with low-med-high but the bah-1000sc does so there is no adjusting to get the right temp. hope this helps

how does the thermostat from big apple supply set the temperature, does it have a attached thermometer??? i ask because depending on different density flooring mediums (paper towel vs. repticarpet vs. tile) temperatures would be different with different on off times

it has a probe just like the zilla one. i just tape it to the floor right above the heatpad as long as the floor temps stay at the right temp

This is exactly why I do not recomment rheostats to control temp.

You do need a good thermostate, and I have never used the Zilla temp
controler. I prefer the proportional type made by Johnson, Helix, et al.

I thought rheostats would be simple but it's not that way...

Thanks but whats a proportional thermostat?

A proportional uses a gradient and decreases/increases the temp.
The other method simply turns the source off and on repeatedly.
This constant turning off and on, wears out your UTH faster.

Sorry this is untrue and its proven that propo take more hydro vs on off types. On off types are fine for reptiles even with a 2 degrees hysterisis, your animals wont know.

If you want low cost go with zoo med repti temp 500r, you will need a thermometer to get the initial temp set but once set you can forget it!

I just saw a Zilla

I just bought a thermostat and it was not a Zilla.

I just saw a Zilla and it was the same thermostat.

Same maker, different distributor.

However, the cost was less on the one that I bought.

have you tried it out?
i've been following this thread because the zilla temp controller is in my price range but i hate buying stuff only to find it's crap.

Spooki - I have not tired it yet. I just put in the Repti-Shelter and some moss to add a warm hide. Well that was yesterday.

I have an 5.5 inch light that sits on top of the tank and I bought today some 25 watt lights to lower the surface temp that I am currently experiencing.

I also had bought one of the Scottish Theromats that are different from the ones that stick onto the bottom of the tank.

So probably Sunday I will have time to strip off the old and put the new one one with the theromstat.

Since it is cooler, or generally cooler, I do not have to really worry about how hot it can get.
