I have a 20 gallon long tank with the 1-5 gallon heater, and the 10-20 gallon heater right next to each other for the warm side. Both heaters are connected to the zoomed thermostat with the 'stat probe on the smaller mat. I have a digital probe on the small one also which is reading about 85-87* F. but on the thermostat itself, the knob is set to like 100. I just moved the tank underneath my window for ease of entry and everything was working fine before i moved it. It was set at 91 on the thermostat and my probe said it was like 91. something
It might just need time to get the right temps, but it's just weird.
