rear fanged venomous colubrid. all info so far has been they are very mildly venomous. but i have heard a report (one mind you) the bite can equal that of a rattle snake however the claims have yet to be backed up. russ got bit once by the female, both fangs punctured the skin and he had no effects from it, not even swelling.

Very nice new additions!! Those are really neat snakes! Thanks for posting the picture with the hood - I haven't actually seen them do that before.

FWCs are definitely one of the most intriguing and unique snakes in my opinion. Maybe someday...

Thanks for sharing Robin :)

How are they temperament wise?
Can you reach in the cage or do you need to hook them first?
Do they do the anaconda thing where you can be holding them and then out of the blue they turn and bite with no warning?

I am debating getting an 06 from Wes but the rear fanged thing with the kids is making me hesitant.

I've either got the best group in the world or these guys have some undeserved reps.

The babies frequently bury themselves and all I ever do is scoop them up with a finger. They will frequently hood but never even attempt to bite.

The adults don't hide but I have zero problems with them either. I just pick them up without squeezing and they are no problem at all. Perhaps a tad squirrelly at first but they calm right down.

The juvies, the 05s, seem the most testy, almost always hooding but again never trying to bit. They do fling their bodies around a bit, more than the babies or adults, but not so much that simply picking them up is all that difficult. So far these guys also like to spend most of thier time hiding as well. They're all in the 3 ft range, well, the 3 that I have now.

I've had several babies, over the years, bite me when cleaning or feeding but have never had a reaction to a bite. I had one 4 ft male get me good when I was bagging him to ship, hooked me in the thumb with one fang and really dug in. It bled freely for about 45 minutes and that's it. He only got me because these guys have no necks, no place to stop if they start backing out of your hand and he just happened to hook my thumb as he was trying to make putting him in the bag fun.

I would seriously recommend these guys if you want a bold beautiful display snake. My breeders get handled maybe twice a month for just a few seconds and even so are, when the mood to actually hold them strikes me, easy to handle. The babies will just hang out like a baby boa.

Do it Steve, you know you want to.....

they are a bit quick and squirmy at times but not bitey, ours hood but thats about it (lots of bluff and drama from these guys LOL). once you scroop them up and they are in hand they are fine.
the one time russ got bit was when the female was in shed. he startled her. she kinda jetted out, he tailed her and she turned around in a defensive manner and bit him, she was just startled and scared.
other than that one time. no striking or anything (except hooding) :)

steve these are extremely fascinating, gorgeous and very rewarding snakes to work with. definitely something you would like allot. i can not wait till they are full grown and put them in a naturalistic set up. they are just fun to watch, as well :)

I want to but the rear fanged thing and the price would cause my wife to kill me if it turned out to be agressive.

She gets very upset when I have animals that are a bit testy.

A dozen red roses, a Brazilian Smooth Snake, maybe a bottle of wine and you're set no matter what happens.

Seriously, I've never seen one that was what I'd call aggressive.

But, she IS your wife so you must decide who makes what decisions when and in regaurds to which etc etc etc.
