i just got a gecko not even a week ago and over the tank i have a large size heating lamp (the tank is 10 gallon btw) and in the lamp i have a red exo terra bulb 50 watts and i pretty much leave it on all the time. and when i go to take my leo out of the tank the tempature reads 90+. so i leave it off but then when i go back a little while later its around 70 degrees. is 90 degrees to hot or not? should i try to order a smaller lamp? would that help?

Where are you measuring the temps at? You need to measure the floor temps not the air. Switch to a under tank heat, as that will give the belly heat that is needed.

90 Degrees is good. I keep mine between 86 and 92. I suggest getting an Under Tank Heater. This works as a better heat source for Leopard Geckos and you will see your little one flourish. It works better because the heat from underneath helps with the digestion for your gecko.

Any questions, ask!

90 degrees for the warm side is fine, defently go with an UTH instead of the light, bright lights can stress them and leos are nocturnal. Belly heat is best for digestion etc..

ok i'll thanks guys. i'll have to order one over the internet though because i dont think they have any here in town, but it will be ok to use the lamp until then? cuz i dont want to cook the little guy lol. what size would be best for a ten gallon? its 20inches X 15inches. will i still need a lamp of some sort after i get the under tank heater?

This site is very good to order off of, seeing as if you find a cheaper price somewhere else theyll sell that item to youf or that price: http://reptilesupply.com/

If you buy a uth, also buy a themp controller. I use a ESU
3 - OUTLET 1,000 WATT ELECTRONIC TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER. Though since you have a 10 gal and only 1 heating fixture(i have 2 for my tank, a red light to be able to see them and uth which are both on the controller) you could buy the 500 1 outlet one.

What is "room temperature"? My room temp is about 72, but others could have it 67. The cool side should be fine in the 70s. Mine spends all day on the hot side and the night (that I see) in the middle. What exactly are your temps around the tank/rack?

Put your thermometer right on the hot spot. the heat source should be on one side of the tank. not in the middle. You need to know the temp in the hotest part of the cage. If you have the thermometer in the middle of the cage and the hot spot to one side you are not getting an acurate reading.
I recomend uying a digital thermometer. They are more acurate.

I use to go onto a lot of the Canadian forums, and there use to be a lot of people saying that they bought their UTH from "Canadian Tire", or atleast I think thats what it's called. Hope that helps...
