I was checking on collared hatchlings in the incubator last night and found my 3d snow leopard just sitting there :D very pretty FAT tummy... but has a funky tail. It is fat and bends then skinny/ or I guess it would be fat and then kinked? What would cause this? Anything I did ? My incubator temps are kept at 85- 86 as I have collareds eggs in there as well.

My 2 other snow kids are fine seem perfect :main_laugh: this baby is perfect too lol, a real cutie, just a whacky tail  Anyone ever have this happen?

Just hatched July 7 / whacky tail :main_yes:

That`s a nice Snow Enigma hatchling you have there ;) Tail kinks are usually caused by temp` fluctuations - sometimes even the smallest change can make it happen. Other possible causes include it`s genetic or the result of the babies tail developing against the egg shell as it was forming - the temp flux is the most common cause though, and is fairly common tbh.

Thanks everyone for your experienced imput :D It may very well have been a temp fluctuation, I do use a thermostat on my incubators but I suppose you still get fluctuations even if they are minute.

Also this lil one seems to have a bit of a stagger like his dad. I love the daddy (Mack Snow enigma) probably the sweetest of all my geckos, but I have to say I do not like this "enigma Thing" :main_rolleyes: seems a shame, I wonder if I really want to pass this on to other babys. Or if I am over reacting..... two do not have it. Hmmmm ???

The "enigma thing" is a real . . . enigma. Some have it at birth, some develop it later. I don't know if there are enigmas where the syndrome starts bad and gets less severe; I don't have that much experience.

It's a gorgeous leo even with a kink :)
It's funny because the enigma syndrome seems to have a lot in common with something called vestibular disease (http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_vestibular_disease.html)that I have seen in a few dogs. They generally seem to exhibit the same symptoms minus the nystagmus. It would be a neat experiment to find out if these two have any relation, perhaps a gene within the enigma morph could disturb the vestibular apparatus? Or more likely they are completely unrelated...regardless, they have some striking similarities. Just some nerdy rambling...don't mind me :p.

Thank you !

PetVet, thanks for your ramblings, hehehehe, not at all goofy, as I have thought this same thing myself many times. I had a rabbit who had that/ head tilt and all, just came on seemed very suddenly. But after reading about it they say bacterial infections can cause this. Anyway I look at it as it is not a good thing.

As far as the geckos , In any other animal that had such a gene that would cause neuro problems, walking in circles, staggering, so forth they would try and stop it and not breed that critter, So I don't understand why this is accepted ??? I'm new to leopards ( 9 months) but not to breeding some reptiles. Just don't seem right, is it just me?

Spider Ball pythons and Jaguar Carpet pythons are also known for neurological issues.

Hi Tony, and those snakes are gorgeous as well as the enigma's. I love my Mack snow enigma dude, lol but it seems sad too to pass on that gene. It's a mixed bag for sure, as he makes pretty kids. Thankfully my adult male is not to bad, just walks like John Wayne, lol. And the new baby is not bad either. I just don't understand why that weakness can not be breed out ??? Or made stronger?

I'm sure everyone has wondered about it.
