I've had an idea for a few years now that I come back to from time to time. It's for a scholarship.
I've been through a lot in the past few years with having my chest reconstructed and most recently my right shoulder. My left gets scoped next month. My dream almost came to a screeching halt and I came close to giving up a few times. I have Determination tattooed on my back for a reason and it's honestly what has kept me going. That's where my idea came from.
I would love and I hope to start up a scholarship in the near future. I want to call it the Determination scholarship. It would be for one boy and one girl that want to pursue a career in the fire service. The scholarship will pay for Emt-Basic training, the 240 Firefighter Level II training, books for both courses and the required gear for the 240 course. That is close to $3,000 for each student. They would also be given a volunteer position with the local fire department. The dept in Johnstown is always in need of volunteers and if I can give them one or two new volunteers that will have the training they need that will be a major help to the dept.
The scholarship would be for anyone graduating from my former high school. I've played with ideas on selecting the student. I have thought about an oral interview asking questions about why they want to be in the fire service to why they should be selected. I've also thought about an essay instead of an oral interview.
I keep running into a wall when it comes to the money. I've thought about paying out of my own pocket for the first year or two until I can raise enough awareness. After that maybe recruit the help of my fire dept and the dept in Johnstown to help raise money for the scholarship. I would love to expand to my rival high school and even to the school my department covers now.
Just an idea I've had. I'm sure I'll make it happen some day. I just wanted to share it with someone since I've never told anyone about it until now.
