So i have never taken Hiccup outside..

I had to run to the garage so i took him out and sat him in the grass..

He froze. i walked 30 yards away (always keeping my eye on him)
and returned still as can be..

i go to pick him up and BOOM freakazoid. Pissed off or scared one..

Super defensive black beard, mouth fully open and body flattened.

ill post pics soon..

SO.. Does your dragon like to go outside?

I had that response once several years ago but not immediately on going outside. I take my beardie out on my 2nd floor front porch in the summer. She runs all over the porch eating my garden (she loves dill) and then finds a patch of sun and basks. Hiccup may have seen something that he perceived as a threat; it may not be the whole outside experience.

My male hates going outside he does the same thing and has even bit me once when I picked him up to take him back in. my female on the other had is the exact opposite. she lives going out and basking in the sun.

Ryuu acts just like Hiccup when I try to take her in... she likes being out there, doesn't want me bugging her :) I tell her to hush that I am too hot and since I am bigger, I get to make the rules =P

My friend had the same experience as you!

She took her very tame friendly Dragon out for the first time, and he totally turned from Jeckyl to Mr. Hide!

He freaked out! Open mouth, puffed up, black beard, and was jumping and leaping at her. I think some just over stimulated, or they are just defensive all of a sudden because of the fear of this unknown territory.

My brother has one, but he lives in Florida, so he has taken his out since he was a baby, he doesnt freak b/c he's used to it. But my friend and I live in NJ, where they can only go out seasonally.

you have to realize also that birds are their #1 predator in the wild-- a hand coming at them, or even our shadow can make them think something is after them.

I put my baby in a critter carrier with no lid, and take her outside to sit on the porch, or to walk around so she can check out the flowers in the garden. She cringes whenever she hears a bird, but otherwise she enjoys the experience. I think she feels safer since she's in her carrier though, and I never let the carrier out of my hands or lap.
