Abbie Needs Her Second Surgery

Well, I thought I would be able to wait until after the Winter to have Abbie's second surgery done, but it looks like I might need to have it done sooner.

She has been less active lately, she kind of just follows me around, sometimes she plays with Brittney, but usually ends up lying on her side while playing, probably to take the pressure off of her knee. She is acting very mopy (SP) lately.

And, this morning Bobby (my roommate) noticed that she is starting to limp on her right leg. I was hoping that the vet was wrong about her right leg, but looks like he is right.

So, I need to raise $1100 for her right Knee surgery. For those that don't know, both of her hind leg knee caps have slipped out of place. On the first knee, and I am guessing it will be done on the second knee as well, what the vet did was pull (?) the knee cap back into place, then he put a metal plate over it that holds the knee cap in place.

Here is a link to the original thread that I posted when I first found out that she needed the surgeries:

So, I need to raise some money as quick as possible. I would like to have it done before it starts snowing too much up here, don't want her slipping and sliding on the ice ;)

So, if you see a gecko that I have available that you like let me know and we will work out a deal, buying more geckos will get you a better deal :main_thumbsup:

I know she will come through the surgery fine, but, I have to admit I am nervous, just like last time. I actually have to hold back the tears right now, she's my little girl, I hate that she has to go through these surgeries, but, I will do whatever it takes to make her better again.

So, it wouldn't be an Abbie thread without pictures of her. Here she is, my baby girl:

Here is her left knee after the first surgery:

This is my favorite picture of her, she loves playing with boxes and empty milk cartons:

JEANNE, I know we talked alittle about Abbie, I am so sorry that you will need the surgery sooner. I hope that the money I spent on your geckos will help and if I see anymore that I can use I will for sure buy them from you to help out. Good luck I certainly understand what you are going thru since my dog is paralysed and we will need alot of work to make her just alittle better. Take care and write if you need anything. Hugs, Deb

I know you can't help but be very anxious about her, but focus on how much better she felt after that first surgery!! :)

Your right Nancy, she was sooo happy! Prancing around the house, playing with all her toys, she deserves to feel that way again. She really is a special girl, I know everyone says that about their dogs, but she really is, she means the world to me, she has brightened up my life, I owe her so much for how happy she makes me feel.

I hope Abby starts feeling better until she can go in for surgery! I wish you had a gecko we could fit in to any of our projects. Love the sunglow but I have to go pick up Penny's (the Boston Terrier) Cushing's scrip refill up on Monday. They're about the same price so of course I have to choose my sick dog over a new gecko. Everytime I take her to the vet he reminds me that no good deed goes unpunished. Wouldn't it be nice for once if our huge hearts didn't mean that our wallets had to hemmorage at the vet's office? Our thoughts are with the two of you!

I don't think I can buy a gecko from you from here and even if I could, I don't have enough room for keeping another one :( Instead of that, give Abbie a big hug on my behalf.

I'll check out your geckos, and if there is anything I can use, I will put on the puppy face for hubby and see what I can do. I hope Abbie feels better soon! good luck raising the money. I know how hard it is when one of your beloved pets is suffering and you just have to wait because you can't come up with the money fast enough. But we always find a way and things will be ok!

We fell your pain.

We have a American Eskimo and she had knee surgery a few years back. in smaller dogs the grooves for the knee caps to sit in do not fully groove if you want to call it. It is common in smaller dogs and usually in both knees. I am surprised they just didn't go in and recut the groove out. We have a nother dog that will have to go through the same thing but we still have awhile before he needs it. It gets worst as they get older.
Our vet said it was $1100.00 to do one knee or $1400 to do both. So we did both.

Wow! That is REALLY cheap! I honestly never heard of any surgery being that cheap..LOL My vet put the metal plate in to prevent the knee cap from ever slipping again. So, I won't have to worry about having to have the surgery done again:)

I am very sorry to hear about Abbie. I am also sorry that I am a nursing student that is struggling to pay my own bills because I can't buy a gecko and help you out. Abbie and your family will be in my prayers though.
