About to shed?

I just noticed that Fleck's skin looks chalky white. Kind of like he rolled around in his calcium powder. Is he going to shed soon??

I've been using paper towels for his moist hide...but I'm going to go to Home Depot today and get some of that organic sphagnum moss I've read about on here

Also, right now his moist hide is the coconut one with paper towels in it. Is that ok to put the moss in? Or should I get one of those tupperware containers??

Sounds like shedding to me. The coconut ones I think are great for dry hides, but do not hold moisture well at all. I was trying to go for natural look all around, but nothing beats tupperware. My advice is, once you get the moss, wrap it in paper towel before putting it in the hide. Reduces the chance of her eating some.

Thanks sweetie! I'll do the tupperware thing. I know what you mean about the natural look lol...but his comfort is more important than looks ya know?

Yeah it sounds like shedding is starting and should continue about every 2-3 weeks if proper conditions are set.

When we got our first ones we did the same thing and wanted to keep things aesthetic but we realized that most of the petshop stuff just doesn't provide what they need; at least for the moist hide. I've seen people use Cool Whip tubs and other old food tubs. We use the basic Publix or Albertson's brand tupperware type tubs. They are usually thinner and easier to cut, they are cheaper, and we like the purple lids.

you could always buy fake leaves and cover the tupperware! I admit i totally took the idea from someone else on this forum but my geckos LOVE them!!

Shedding

Hi, i am new to this and have only kept geckos since December. I lost my boy through lack of shedding (exteeeemaly upset). However it was suggested to me to bath gecko if they have any problems. Just an inch or so of luke warm water and let them bath regularly for about 20 minutes at a time up to twice a day depending on how bad. I have a moisture box now as well and my girl has shed well since. I hope i don't sound like i'm talking rubbish. I have not found a book or web sight that gives more basic cae. Cheers. Binksy.

A soak generally isn't necessary unless there is some stubborn skin on the toes that your leo cannot get. A humid hide is necessary to have. The odd thing is, my leo has never been in the humid hide, but ever since I put it in her tank, she has not had 1 shed problem. Just having it in there has increased humidity enough for her.

She's probably been in her humid hide without you looking. We can't watch the little guys 24/7!

Well, I thought I would use the part of the brain we have and they don't to kinda "spy" on her lol. I did this at the beginning because she had so many shedding problem that I was paranoid and needed to know she was using it. I made a little indentation in the moss right by the opening that would easily be covered if she stepped anywhere near it. That mark was there until I switched out the moss. I didn't do it after that because her shedding was fine, so I guess she could have used it since then. But I know she didn't for the first shed after putting it in.

I bet we all wish we could watch them 24/7, though :main_yes:
