Hello,

I was just wondering, what the is maximum temperature a leopard gecko can handle before it has to worry about being burned? Sometimes the temp. from my heating pad fluctuates so i'm just curious for the sake of safety until i can get a thermostat :) Thanks!

i wouldnt want mine to go much higher then 95. you might try to invest in a Rheostat, to adjust the output of heat of your UTH.

95 is the minimum hot spot temp I would aim for. It will take some pretty intense heat to actually burn your gecko, hotter than a properly functioning heat pad should ever reach. What is the current temp range?

If your heating pad is getting hotter than 97ish I would just start to layer more substrate above the pad to help reduce the temps. I try to keep my hot spot at about 95.

ok, because i had the temp peak at about 38 degrees today (100F) at one point, so i of course got very worried as i'm aiming for around 30-33, max of 35 (95F), I just would hate myself if my new little girl got burned. However she was laying in her human hide and didn't seem bothered, i'm pretty sure my pad has hot spots (it's just a sunbeam heating mat) so i suspect where i had the probe is where it gets hottest. I'm a worrier by nature :)

btw, i do use a dimmer with the pad but it was staying around 33-34 degrees then suddenly today it was 38, however, i had the cover to the tank (a 15G aquarium) on, so i'm thinking maybe the heat got trapped in there more, i use a 25W night time bulb (one of those blue cylinder shapes bulbs) in it, i think i may leave if off, i don't think she can get out of the tank :)

100F won't burn them, remember that it's just barely above your body temperature, and they don't burn when you hold them. :D I keep my hot spots between 96-98 on average, with a degree or two of fluctuation either way.

Becareful if you have 100F in an open area, that means it'll be 100+ inside or near hides. If you use tiles, there may be hot spots that'll burn your gecko.

I'm using papertowel and i'm pretty sure right where my probe is (held down by the corner of a hide) is the hottest spot, i don't think it got to 28 for long and i of course lowered it as soon as I seen that, I'm definitely going to get a thermostat soon tho :)

Good point Bonnie. When measuring temps be sure you measure the temp inside the hide the leo will be using...tape the temp probe to the floor surface at the hide spot with a small piece of masking tape and monitor carefully. I've noticed the temp in a tupperware hide could be 93 at the floor, then if you place an Exo Terra medium cave over the same spot it will measure 99 because of the heat buildup in the hide etc., so be careful you are comparing apples to apples.
Also, if you are using racks, do a study to check the temps at all levels. The temps at the bottom level could be 93, but the top shelf could only be 83...huge difference in rack system/shelf level temps!

Your core body temp is 98.5 but the outside of your body is 89-92f. Temp gun your arm if you dont believe me.....
