I am still getting to know my new beardie which I got from someone during the weekend. She is 4 years old and on the small side because she was not well taken care of at her first home (the people I got her from did a very good job of rehabilitating her). I'm not sure how often to feed her live food. The people I got her from were feeding her about 2 dozen crickets once a week and, of course, veggies every day. I've heard there can be problems feeding beardies too much protein. I'm not sure how frequently and how much live food they should get (I'm a leopard gecko person so I'm used to feeding crickets every other day. Beardies are a lot bigger). Any advice would be helpful.

hi Aliza first off congrats on the new beardie..we feed our eight year olds veggies every day and insects every other day..we also spice it up for them different combinations romaine and carrots one day and squash and raspberries another day and they seem to love the variety..now on the insects we do the same mixing it up but every other day in different combinations : crickets, butter worms, hissing roaches and horn worms..now on the amount giving my personal opinion 2 dozen once a week isn't enough for a 4 year old female dragon.. at least a dozen every other feeding if your only feeding crickets ....so if your feeding every other day and thats 4 times in a week thats 48 crickets a week. you will diffenitley see a difference in her..hope this helps lots of luck and congrats again..

THanks for the responses. I got a useful response from another forum, so now I'm feeding greens (a variety of veggies and fruit) daily and 15-20 crickets every other day. I'll add in other insect or worm feeders when they're available. So far the biggest difference I've noticed is that she's pooping just about every day.

I have found that my dragons especially like red and yellow bell peppers
You don't have to spend the extra money and buy the red and yellow ones-Just buy the green peppers and after they sit out for a couple of days in a cool spot or even in the fridge-they will turn yellow and red
Much cheaper that way
:main_yes:
I also love them-LOL

Another favorite of theirs is grated raw sweet potatoes
Both the peppers and the sweet potatoes are mixed in with their greens

Got picky green eaters?

Toss some mealworms or supers-depending upon your dragons size-in with the greens and they will eventually end up eating the greens as well as the worms

I have learned all sort of nifty tricks in the 10 plus years that I have been keeping these guys
